FINE-ART DIGITAL PRINTING

INSTRUCTOR: RICHARD EDELMAN
July 23-August 13
Wednesdays, 6-9pm

Making exhibition-quality digital prints takes time and expertise. This class will examine the tools and methods for making b&w and color fine-art prints with digital inkjet printers. Using Adobe Photoshop you will learn to modify your images in a manner which is easy, fun and based on conventional darkroom experience and techniques.

We will examine a variety of general approaches to printing, utilize basic and advanced color management techniques, compare papers, and even compare digital processing with prints made in conventional darkrooms. Students may work with images made on film (to be scanned), or digitally captured. We will discuss not only the processes involved in making prints—but we will explore what a fine print is…the relationship of tone, hue, contrast—and how these characteristics tend to be affected by materials in the digital domain.  There will an additional optional trip to Woodstock Graphics Studio, which is located across the street from CPW.

RICHARD EDELMAN is the principal of Woodstock Graphics Studio, which specializes in retouching and printing work for artists.  He received his Master's degree in photography from Pratt Institute and a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology. Edelman has taught photography at the New School, School of Visual Arts, ICP, and William Paterson University (NJ). His photographs are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Bibliothčque Nationale, Polaroid International Collection, and the Everson Museum. TEEN PHOTOGRAPHY CAMP
(For Ages 13-17)

INSTRUCTOR: PHIL MANSFIELD
July 14-17 or August 11-14
Monday to Thursday, 10-3pm

Are you excited about making photographs?  Do you want to explore your talents while engaging with other young artists? CPW’s Teen Photography Camp provides a unique, creative and supportive learning environment for young adults ages 13 through 17.  Over the course of four inspiring and motivating days, participants will learn about the aesthetics and technical capabilities of digital photography through the direction of photographer and educator Phil Mansfield.

Based in CPW’s brand new state-of-the art digital lab, the Teen Photo Camp is made up of two components- the exploration of the art of photography and the development of technical skills used within a digital darkroom. By getting behind the lens and photographing in Woodstock, the students will develop a thorough understanding of photographic techniques including the qualities of light and shadow, a sense of motion and an examination of the relationship of subject to the camera.  In the digital lab they will gain an understanding of the digital workflow, file organization, inkjet printing and Adobe Photoshop as a tool for image editing, enhancement & manipulation.

As participants strive for their creative vision in the digital workflow, they will work closely with Phil Mansfield and the CPW staff who will offer insights into photography as both an artistic expression and a possible career.

The Teen Photo Camp will culminate with an exhibition/critique of the students work in CPW’s Gallery on the final evening of each session.

PHIL MANSFIELD joined the CPW staff as the Digital Lab Manager in the Spring 2008.  His photography has appeared in such publications as The New York Times, Psychology Today and Scholastic Magazine.  He is currently photographing for a children’s cookbook for Bloomsbury.  Phil lives with his wife and two children in West Shokan, NY.

Please bring: your digital camera and memory card. Note: Digital SLR cameras are available for loan at CPW.
