“Meet the Artist”

On Thursday, April 6, we will be joined by Sam Margevicius and Liz Nielsen for “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Margevicius and Nielsen will present their past and ongoing projects, which both utilize aspects of alternative processes and the darkroom. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s Youtube page just before the start time.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Sam Margevicius is a photographic artist based in Bearsville, New York, USA. His work begins with photographs, and he builds them into systems of meaning through experimental frames, installations, and books. Margevicius privileges process, emphasizing ideas that emerge in dialogue with material. Margevicius has exhibited widely throughout the United States, and recently abroad as part of the Riga Photography Biennale in Riga, Latvia. Solo exhibitions of Margevicius’ work have been held at the Baxter St. CCNY gallery in New York, NY, and the Vicksburg Cultural Arts Center in Vicksburg, MI. He has participated in several artist residencies, including at the ISSP in Riga, Latvia. In 2021, Small Editions NYC published Margevicius’ artist book Darkroom Drawing, which has been collected by libraries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, NY, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY.
Liz Nielsen is an experimental photographer based in Newburgh, New York, USA. Her photographs are made without a camera and can be described as light paintings or photograms. She works in the analog color darkroom exposing light-sensitive paper and processing it through traditional photographic chemicals. Nielsen received an MFA from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 2004, her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2002, and her BA in Philosophy and Spanish from Seattle University in 1997. Liz has exhibited her work extensively including recent solo exhibitions in New York, London, and Paris. Her photograms have been featured at international art fairs such as Paris Photo, Photo London, AIPAD New York, Unseen Amsterdam, and Landskrona Foto in Sweden. Nielsen has been reviewed in Artforum, the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker, the Guardian, the London Financial Times, LensCulture, Vogue UK, and FOAM magazine among other
