On Thursday, June 22, we welcome Ashley M. Freeby and Jonathan Mark Jackson to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. They will be discussing the works currently on view as part of CPW’s latest exhibition In the Room, as well as other new and related works. Freeby will have books available for sale. Her talk will not be live-streamed, but Jackson’s talk will be live-streamed on CPW’s Youtube Page.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Designer, artist, and truth-teller, Ashley M. Freeby uses natural materials, poetic language and minimalism to explore site, monuments, and data as a way of investigating the essence of memory. Unbound by medium, she allows her work to be centered by research, and truthful and uncensored narratives. Her recent project, (un)sterile soil, is a virtual installation of content where she highlights her work from 2016 to 2020, and collaborates with seven writers or artists to create a website over seven installments. (un)sterile soil, like much of Freeby’s work, is about countering the narrative of Black bodies killed by law enforcement. She explores sites from above to below the surface to shift perspective and retain the memory for those lives lost.
Freeby is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, currently resides in Eastern Pennsylvania, and is the Communications Director and Head Designer for Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency.
Jonathan Mark Jackson (b. 1996) received a BA from Amherst College, and a MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. His work focuses on retouching the archives of colonial racial slavery, to visualize the haptic and sonic quality of phantom Black subjects. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Boston College.
