On Thursday, July 6, we welcome Ivan Forde and Sonia Louise Davis to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Forde will focus on the power of poetry and narrative in his visual art practice while presenting new blueprint cyanotype paintings and past commissioned projects. Davis will trace her work from her time as a CPW artist in residence and plans to read a text from her book “slow and soft and righteous, improvising at the end of the world (and how we make a new one)”.

Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.

Ivan Forde has held performances at The Kitchen, The Jewish Museum, and The Whitney Museum. Select Institutional Group Exhibitions include the Smithsonian National African American Museum Of History And Culture, Columbia University’s Wallach Gallery, Syracuse University Palitz gallery, MICA, MCA Chicago, The Studio Museum, and Ingrid Deusse Gallery in Antwerp. Forde is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the Powerhouse Arts Inaugural AIR fellowship (2023), Whitney Independent Study Program (2022), the 2020 Emerging Artist Award by Baxter Street Camera Club of New York, the Civitella Ranieri visual arts fellowship (2019) and the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans (2017). Residencies include the Lower East Side Printshop, YADDO, Pioneer Works, Vermont studio center, and ACRE Projects Chicago. Ivan teaches at Columbia University and SUNY Purchase College. Forde’s work is represented in numerous collections including Syracuse University Art Museum, The Studio Museum, The Escalate collection at Chapman University, and the 7G Foundation.

Born and raised in New York City, Sonia Louise Davis is a visual artist, writer and performer. She is currently a Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Fellow at the Queens Museum and her first institutional solo show will open there in October 2023. Her most recent solo exhibition, “resonant frequencies, blossoming tones,” at HESSE FLATOW (NY) was listed a “must see” by Artforum in September 2022. She has presented her work at the Whitney Museum (NY), ACRE (Chicago), Sadie Halie Projects (Minneapolis), Ortega y Gasset (Brooklyn), Rubber Factory (NY), and Artists Space (NY), among other venues. Residencies and fellowships include the Laundromat Project’s Create Change Fellowship (NY), Civitella Ranieri (Italy), New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (Brooklyn), Culture Push Fellowship for Utopian Practice (NY), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace Artist in Residence Program (NY), Studio Immersion Project Fellowship at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (NY), Right Now Artist Publication Grant from Women’s Studio Workshop (Rosendale) and STONELEAF RETREAT (Kingston). Her newest book, “slow and soft and righteous, improvising at the end of the world (and how we make a new one)” was published in 2021 by Co—Conspirator Press, which operates out of the Feminist Center for Creative Work in Los Angeles. An honors graduate of Wesleyan University (BA, African American Studies) and alumna of the Whitney Independent Study Program, Sonia lives and works in Harlem.
