On Thursday, November 2, we welcome Marcus Xavier Chormicle to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Chormicle will be presenting two of his on-going projects Still Playing With Fire and Say Uncle. He will have zines available that he’s been making during his current residency at Light Work. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s Youtube Page at 6 pm.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
About the Artist:
Marcus Xavier Chormicle is a lens-based artist from Las Cruces, New Mexico. His work focuses on family, memory, and the intersection of class, race, and history in the Southwest. He received a Bachelors of Journalism at Arizona State University, Phoenix.
Through his practice of site specific photography he aims to connect the history of the place to the current circumstances of his family as the subject of his imagery. His two major works are “Still Playing With Fire,” a multigenerational reflection on the violence of Southern New Mexico and its impact on the living people of today; and “Say Uncle,” a celebration of heritage where he follows his uncles through the canyons of their ancestral homeland on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation.
He recently closed the Cristian Anthony Vallejo Memorial Gallery in Las Cruces, New Mexico, an art space dedicated to his late little cousin who passed away of a drug overdose in 2020. During the two year run at the gallery he held 15 exhibitions of primarily Indigenous and Latinx artists, with the expressed goal of connecting the artist’s work to the day to day life of the average Cruceño, through artistic reflections on generational cycles, issues of migration, spirituality, and Indigenous ways of expressing place.
In October 2023 he will be in residence at Light Work in Syracuse, New York, where he will work towards publishing his two ongoing projects, Still Playing With Fire and Say Uncle.
