On Thursday, February 27, we welcome Michael Torres to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Torres will focus his talk around Black History Month and the considerations of age and skin color. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Michael A Torres is a self – taught photographer based in Kingston, NY. He returned to his home town of Kingston after living in Baltimore for 30 years. While in Baltimore he was under the mentorship of James Phillips and Valerie Maynard. Michael was raised by an African American mother and Puerto Rican father, and the influence of both cultures enriches his artistic perspective. His mother, Mary, gave him her Kodak Brownie camera at the age of 10 and he carried on her practice of capturing family life and events. Michael turned toward a more serious study and practice of photography in 2007, after firmly establishing his medical career and recognizing the need for balance and creative expression. Exhibiting sharp observational skills, attention to detail, intercultural competence, and a profound sense of spirituality, his work encompasses an eclectic array of photography genres. His specialty is performance photography, with a focus on jazz photography.
