“Meet the Artist”

On Thursday, April 20, we welcome Näkki Goranin and Oliver Wasow to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Goranin and Wasow will discuss the current exhibition Black Photobooth: From the Collections of Näkki Goranin and Oliver Wasow, which features over 100 miniature portraits of Black Americans, mostly from the 1930s and 1940s, that draws from their two prominent private collections. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s Youtube Page just before the start time.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Näkki Goranin is a Vermont photographer and writer. Since receiving her Master’s Degree in Photography and Folklore, she has pursued her interest in documentary and photo history. As a Vermont Artist-in Residence (administered by the Vermont Council on the Arts), Goranin received an NEA grant, numerous fellowships and participation in shows in major American and European museums. Featured in the Smithsonian Magazine, People Magazine, GEO, The New York Times, as well as PBS and the BBC. Näkki is also the author of American Photobooth (2008 WWNORTON). Most recently her work has been shown on the Arte tv channel (France and Germany) and a documentary on Gordon Lightfoot on CBC Canada.
Oliver Wasow is a fine art photographer currently living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BA from Hunter College and his Master’s Degree from the Transart Institute, In Austria. His work is currently represented by Theodore:Art Gallery in NYC.
Wasow has had a number of one person exhibitions, including shows at the Josh Baer Gallery, Janet Borden Gallery, The Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, LA, The South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in North Carolina, and Galerie De Poche in Paris, France. His work has also been included in numerous national and international group shows, including such benchmark exhibitions as ‘Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop,’ at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, ‘Image World,’ at the Whitney Museum of Art in NYC, and ‘The Photography of Invention,’ at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
His photographs are included in a number of private collections and are also represented in various prominent public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and The Milwaukee Art Museum. Reviews of his work have been featured in most major art publications, including, among others, Art Forum, Art in America and The New York Times.
Wasow has produced two books, “Artist Unknown” in 2007 and “Friends, Enemies and Strangers,” in 2018. He has been the recipient of various grants and awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 1999 and, in 2000, his second New York State Council on the Arts Grant.
