On Thursday, February 20, we welcome Sabiha Çimen (current Woodstock AIR) to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Çimen will talk about her long term project Hafiz, which received several awards like the W. Eugene Smith Fund, the World Press Photo Grant, the Canon Photojournalist Grant, and finally the Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Award. She will discuss her general photographic practice and personal journey of being a photographer. Çimen will have copies of her book, Hafiz, available for sale during the event.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Sabiha Çimen was born in Istanbul, Turkey. She is a self-taught photographer, graduated with an undergraduate degree in International Trade and Finance, and a Masters degree in Cultural Studies in Istanbul Bilgi University. Sabiha Çimen works on long term photo projects focusing on portraiture and still life rooted in Islamic culture. Her first and latest long-term photo project ‘Hafiz’ focuses on the daily life of the young girls in Quran schools in Turkey. Her work is also supported by Lightwork, World Press photo, Eugene Smith Foundation, Aperture-Paris Photo. She is a member photographer in Magnum Photo Agency. She lives between Istanbul and New York. Çimen is mostly developing self-reflective projects close to home in lstanbul.
