On Thursday, July 31, we welcome Virginia Reath to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Virginia will present an overview and discussion of her art practice and clinical practice in gynecology, and how the two have influenced one another. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Virginia Reath RPA MPH PC has been a practicing clinician, educator and activist in the fields of gynecology, sexual and reproductive health care for the past 30 years. Virginia studied painting and drawing at Bard College in the early 70’s. It was during this time that her commitment as a feminist brought her attention to the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and the lack of parity. She chose health care as her political work. Her political interests and clinical experience in matters of the flesh have been integral to her practice as an artist. She resists the idea of the body as a singular static object, echoing Simone de Beauvoir’s statement, “The Body is not a thing,it is a situation.”
From 1995-1999 Reath co-hosted “SNATCHES” a cult favorite women’s health talk show on WBAI, NYC public radio. Reath created and produced “Changing Bodies”, a workshop on menstruation for The Girls Project an after school program for 10 yrs. She was awarded “The Pink Award” by The Girls Project in 2005. Reath was the recipient of The ACLU Reproductive Rights Project Award in 2000 for her work and activism in women’s reproductive justice.
