On Thursday, December 14, we welcome Yolanda del Amo and Maureen Drennan to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Del Amo will discuss Refuge, her recently completed project that reimagines the visual representation of refugees through tableau photographs. She will also introduce two projects in-progress: Team, which addresses the intersection between education, entertainment and economics and Always, Somewhere, Someone, a body of work that explores how folklore can act as a means of survival and resistance. Drennan will be presenting images from her book, Meet Me in the Green Glen, which is an intimate photographic look at a reclusive marijuana grower in California. He was an isolated man whose environment was both ominous and verdant. She photographed him for nine years while the laws and stigma around marijuana cultivation changed radically in California. Both artists will have books for sale throughout the evening. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s Youtube Page at 6 pm.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Yolanda del Amo is a Spanish-born, New York-based artist who works in photography. Her work questions how social constructs such as class, gender and family influence community, interpersonal psychology, and identity. Looking at individuals through a sociocultural and psychological lens, she explores how we live and connect with ourselves and others, and how we shape the world around us.
Solo exhibitions have been held at the Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, Oregon, the Hudson Franklin Gallery in New York City, and Light Work in Syracuse, New York, among others. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at venues such as Julie Saul Gallery in New York City, the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
She has been the recipient of multiple awards, such as a commendation at the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition organized by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and the second prize at the Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales in Buenos Aires. Institutions and Foundations that have supported her work through production grants include the New York State Council in the Arts (NYSCA), the Jerome Foundation, the John Anson Kittredge Fund and the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
She teaches photography at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
Maureen Drennan is a photographer born and based in New York City. Her photographs have been in exhibitions at the Museum of the City of New York, National Portrait Gallery, Tacoma Art Museum, Art Museum of South Texas, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Dorsky Museum, Ackland Museum of Art, Aperture, Mrs. Gallery, Transmitter Gallery, Field Projects, Partners and Son, Center for Photography at Woodstock, and Houston Center for Photography. Her images have been featured in The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The New York Times, California Sunday Magazine, Photograph Magazine, Huffington Post, Art 21 Magazine, UK Telegraph, Refinery 29, Narratively, and the Economic Hardship Reporting Project. She teaches photography at LaGuardia Community College in Queens, New York.
