STATE OF AFFAIRS Panel Discussion

Saturday, June 20 at 1:00 pm

The Center for Photography at Woodstock, alongside Ruben Natal-San Miguel, fine art photographer and curator of CPW’s Spring Affair exhibition fundraiser, is pleased to announce STATE OF AFFAIRS, a panel discussion centered on the artists in Spring Affair and how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the photography community. Other topics include the need for equality and social justice—brought to the forefront through ongoing Black Lives Matter protest—and how photography as an art discipline interacts with these ideas.

The online event will be held Saturday, June 20 at 1:00 pm EST. Ruben Natal-San Miguel will moderate the panel discussion. Participants include photographers Keliy Anderson-Staley, Andrea Blanch, Lola Flash, Lissa Rivera, Miriam Romais, Nichole Washington, and CPW Director Hannah Frieser.

Photography can serve as a powerful catalyst for change. Activism and consciousness can be developed with the creation and dissemination of photographs. Join us as we discuss how photographs and photographers can and have been active elements of transformative change.

STATE OF AFFAIR will be held virtually though Zoom. To attend, participants will need to signup beforehand with spots being limited to 100 participants. Spots will be given out on a first come first serve basis. Registration is free. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!

KELIY ANDERSON-STALEY is nationally known for her wet-plate collodion portrait work and has exhibited at museums and galleries across the country. She grew up off the grid in Maine and lives and works in Houston, Texas. She is represented by Catherine Edelman Gallery and was included in the Photography Now 2018 exhibition at CPW.

ANDREA BLANCH is a New York-based, award-winning fashion, fine art and conceptual photographer, whose work has been featured on the cover of Vogue, Rolling Stone, New York Times Magazine and more. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of Musée Magazine.

Lola Flash uses photography to challenge stereotypes and offer new ways of seeing that transcend and interrogate gender, sexual, and racial norms. Flash works primarily in portraiture with a 4×5 film camera, engaging those who are often deemed invisible. Last summer, she participated in CPW’s artist-in-residence program, Woodstock AIR.

RUBEN NATAL-SAN MIGUEL created his newest series, Still Life & Alive, by collecting found personal around his home. His photographs were featured in a solo exhibition, titled Making the Invisible Visible at CPW in 2019.

LISSA RIVERA is a photographer and curator based in New York, NY. Rivera received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, where she became fascinated with the social history of photography and the evolution of identity, sexuality and gender in relationship to material culture. Beautiful Boy, Rivera’s latest project, takes her interest in photography’s connection with identity to a personal level, focusing on her domestic partner as muse.

MIRIAM ROMAIS is an award-winning Brazilian-American photographer based in Saratoga Springs, NY. Her work often addresses topics of solitude, home, community, feminism, labor, and food politics. Romais is currently featured in an exhibition with Saratoga Arts, titled Painted Voices: Documenting Americas Murals.

NICHOLE WASHINGTON uses photography and paint to create bold and expressive images that are an exploration of feminine strength, identity and spirituality. Her work centralizes super heroine characters that exist in an imagined space meant for healing and transformation. She is inspired by narratives from dreams and meditations. By combing photography with paint she is able to blend the lines between real and fantasy.
