Meryl Meisler and Viktorsha Uliyanova

On Thursday, December 15, we will be joined by Hudson Valley-based artists Meryl Meisler and Viktorsha Uliyanova for Meet the Artist night at CPW. Both artists will present their work followed by a Q&A session. These talks will be livestreamed on CPW’s Facebook page.
Thursdays at CPW will feature illuminating talks with different local and visiting artists with an evening of Meet the Artist. Join us from 5:30-7:30 pm to introduce yourself to new work, explore artists’ processes, and meet other local artists. Coffee and tea will be provided. Meet the Artists will take place at CPW’s facilities at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY, and is free and open to the public.
About the Artists:
Viktorsha Uliyanova is a New York artist whose photographic, fiber and installation works investigate loss, cultural identity, and trauma narrated through the prism of memory. Uliyanova’s practice is informed by her upbringing in the Soviet Union, political repression, and the immigrant experience. Although her art is grounded in analog photography, her work often features a dialogue between different materials including fabric, video, and found objects. Through working with cloth, alternative processes, and multimedia installations, Uliyanova builds and registers unrecorded traumatic memories that exist outside of historical archives into physical spaces and forms, making them visible.
Uliyanova received her BA in English from Hunter College in New York and is currently pursuing an MFA in Photography at State University of New Paltz. Her work has been supported by a number of grants including Di Palo-Williams grant, Sojourner Truth Fellowship, and Research for Creative Projects grant. Uliyanova has taught many workshops and is currently an Instructor of Record at SUNY New Paltz.
Meryl Meisler was born in 1951 in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, New York. Inspired by Diane Arbus, she enrolled in photography classes at The University of Wisconsin–Madison. Moving to NYC in 1975, she studied with mentor Lisette Model, continuing to document life with her quirky eye. While frequenting legendary discos, punk clubs, and Go-Go bars, Meisler captured hedonistic havens, celebrities, and revelers of the night, never revealing these and other large bodies of unseen work until retiring from her 31-year career as an NYC public school art teacher.
Her books A Tale of Two Cities Disco Era Bushwick (2014), Purgatory & Paradise SASSY ‘70s Suburbia & The City (2015), and New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco (2021) are internationally acclaimed. In 2021 CPW exhibited Meryl’s solo show “New York Paradise Lost” and was a recipient of the CPW Affinity Award. Her first solo museum exhibition opens in May 2023 at the Zillman Museum. Meryl lives in NYC and Woodstock, continuing her photographic memoir begun in 1973 – a uniquely American story, sweet and sassy with a pinch of mystery. CLAMP represents her work.
