“Meet the Artist”

On Thursday, March 2, CPW welcomes photographers and independent publishers Juan Madrid and Veronica Melendez for “Meet the Artist” night. Madrid, who explores visual language and the intersection of identity with place and class in his work, and Melendez, whose work speaks to the broader theme of how humans create a home, will present their ongoing and past projects. Books, zines, and prints from both artists will be available. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s Facebook page just before the start time.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Juan Madrid is a photographer and book artist based in the Hudson Valley of New York. He earned his BFA in Professional Photographic Illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology and was the lab manager at the Center for Photography at Woodstock. He has worked as a freelance photographer for clients including VICE, Bloomberg Businessweek, Topic, and Society Magazine (France) and teaches workshops centered around zine and bookmaking. He is one of the members of the publishing collective Los Sumergidos, whose first collaborative photo-text book Los Sumergidos was shortlisted at PHotoESPAÑA and Les Rencontres d’Arles in 2019.
Veronica Melendez is a photographer, illustrator, and curator based between Washington D.C. and Troy, NY. She is the founder of La Horchata, an arts publication highlighting creatives from the Central American diaspora. She was selected for the 2018 Archive of Documentary Arts Collection Award for Documentarians of the American South by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Duke University. And her work has been featured in the Washington Post, NPR, VICE, and Hyperallergic among others. Her arts publication La Horchata has been exhibited at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, CA and the inaugural exhibition Presente! in the Molina Family Latino Gallery at the National Museum of American History. She received a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and MFA from the University of Hartford. She is currently the Technical Instructor of Photography at Bennington College.
