“Meet the Artist”

On Thursday, March 16, CPW welcomes Melanie Gonzalez and Carmen Lizardo for “Meet the Artist” night. Gonzalez and Lizardo, who both utilize a variety of mediums and alternative processes in their work, will present their past and going works. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s Facebook page just before the start time.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Melanie Gonzalez, born in The Bronx, NY, of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, practices fine photographic arts through printed photographs, fashion design, wearable art, photographic sculptures, film, and editing.
Gonzalez holds a BA in Studio Art (Photography) from The City College of New York. Her multimedia photography project Discount Saints was funded in 2015-16 in part by an Arts Fund Grant from the Bronx Council on the Arts.
In 2019, she was an En Foco Photography Fellow, from 2019-2020 she was an Artist in Residence at ChaShaMa’s Space to Connect, in 2021 was an invited Community Artist-in-Residence at Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. In 2019, Gonzalez started Suzanna Productions as a way to professionally present multimedia creative solutions derived from her photography.
Carmen Lizardo is a Caribbean artist born in the Dominican Republic. She holds a BFA in Photography and an MFA in Digital Art from Pratt Institute. For Lizardo, using multiple media is an essential part of her work, particularly alternative photo processes, printmaking, drawing, and video work. Lizardo’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She has received several awards, including a Women Studio Workshop Book Production Grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship (nominated in both Painting and Photography), The Academy of Arts and Letters, and an Enfoco fellowship. Lizardo was one of five American Artists of Latino descent awarded an international travel and production grant from the U.S. Department of Cultural Affairs. Her works and process are included in two academic books: Gum Printing: A Step-by-Step Manual Highlighting Artists and Their Creative Practice (Focal Press) and The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes (Cengage Learning). Lizardo is a faculty at the State University of New York at New Paltz.
