“Meet the Artist”

On Thursday, May 4, we welcome curator, writer, and researcher Marina Caron to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Caron will be presenting on the current exhibition at the Hessel Museum, Bettina: The Fifth Point of the Compass, which is up until May 28, 2023. This exhibition is centered around artist Bettina Grossman, a lifelong New Yorker who lived and worked for nearly fifty years at Manhattan’s storied Chelsea Hotel. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s Youtube Page just before the start time.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Marina Caron is a curator, writer and researcher based in New York. Marina is currently a master’s candidate in Curatorial Studies at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College. She has a BFA from Cooper Union.
Marina regularly collaborates with LC Queisser gallery in Tbilisi. She was the Summer 2021 research resident with Propaganda Network, Tbilisi. She co-founded C&O curatorial group with Lisa Offerman, who organized four exhibitions in Berlin and Cologne between 2015 and 2018. She was artist Yto Barrada’s studio manager from 2019-2021, working with her on her recent exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2021-2022), Mathaf, Doha (2020), and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council New York (2019), among others. Prior to this, she was registrar at Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin from 2015 to 2017.
A lifelong New Yorker, artist Bettina Grossman (1927–2021) lived and worked for nearly fifty years at Manhattan’s storied Chelsea Hotel. Bettina traveled in Europe from 1957-65 before settling at the Chelsea Hotel in 1972. In 2010, Corinne van der Borch released her film, Girl with Black Balloons, which led to Bettina’s encounter with artist Yto Barrada who has been instrumental in the resurgence of interest in Bettina’s work.
Recent solo or two-person exhibition include Bettina: The Fifth Point of the Compass, The Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson (2023); Bettina: A Perpetual Poem of Renewal, Les Recontres de la Photographie, Arles (2022); and The Power of Two Suns with Yto Barrada at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Governors Island, (2019). Recent group exhibitions include Greater New York, MoMA PS1, New York (2021); and Artist’s Choice: Yto Barrada—A Raft, the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2021). The monogoraph Bettina was published in 2022 by Aperture, New York, and Atelier EXB, Paris. This book was developed by Barrada and designer Gregor Huber in collaboration with Bettina up until her death in November 2021.
