On Thursday, July 13, we welcome Tamara Cedré (2023 Woodstock AIR) to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Cedré will introduce her ongoing work in Puerto Rico that has spanned the last 7 years and discuss how political resistance is rooted within her community-centered practice.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Tamara Cedré was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Central Florida, often visiting Puerto Rico— where her family is from. As a lens-based artist and educator, Cedré uses documentary forms to reveal the conditions of underrepresented communities. Her artistic practice addresses issues at the nexus of land, labor, migration and identity. Her recent work mines historical and personal archives that articulate diasporic identity shaped by the colonial status of her family’s homeland of Puerto Rico. In an act of reclamation, she constructs an archive of found, contested, and reimagined photographs to serve as a site for understanding issues surrounding the political status and identity of Boricuas. Cedré received her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and has been the recipient of awards and grants from the Center for Creative Citizenship, the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the California Arts Council. She is currently a Visiting Professor at Pitzer College and lives/works along the route of the supply chain between Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.
