On Thursday, September 21, we welcome Sara Macel to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Macel will share her most recent work, What Did the Deep Sea Say, which mixes the past and present through contemporary color film images and vernacular family black-and-white photographs to tell a story about women from different generations within her family. Additionally, Sara will share rarely seen book dummies from her projects and discuss the process of finding universal themes within deeply personal work and translating those stories into photobooks. She will have books available for purchase!
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Sara Macel is a photographer based in Queens, NY. She received her BFA in Photography + Imaging from NYU and her MFA in Photography, Video & Related Media from SVA. Her photographic work is narratively-based and often deals with themes of the archive, family, memory, and place. Macel’s work has been internationally exhibited and is in various collections, including the MFA Houston and CPW. Sara was named one of PDN’s 30 Photographers to Watch, an Aaron Siskind Foundation Fellow, and an Artist-In-Residence at Light Work. Her monographs include May the Road Rise to Meet You, Kiss & Tell, and What Did the Deep Sea Say. Sara Macel is the Program Coordinator from the photography degree program at SUNY Rockland CC.
