On Thursday, March 7, we welcome Phyllis Galembo to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Galembo will present a survey of her work in which she photographically documents rituals and masquerade in Africa and the Americas. She will have copies of her books for sale including Maske, Mexico Masks/Rituals, and Sodo, Haiti 1997-2001.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Phyllis Galembo photographically documents cultural, religious traditions and the transformative power of ritual dress in Africa and the Americas. Galembo’s books include Sodo, Haiti 1997-2001 pubished by Datz Press 2021, Mexico Masks/ Rituals copublished by Radius Books and DAP 2019, Maske, 2012, reprinted by Aperture,2016, Divine Inspiration: From Benin to Bahia (1993), University of New Mexico Press, Vodou: Visions and Voices of Haiti (1998) Ten Speed Press and Dressed for Thrills: 100 Years of Halloween Costumes and Masquerade (2002), Abrams books. Ms. Galembo has had one-person exhibitions at the International Center for Photography, The George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, the American Museum of Natural History New York, Fashion Institute of Technology New York, and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture New York, The Tang Teaching Museum, Skidmore College, Steven Kasher Gallery, NYC and Reflex Gallery, Amsterdam. Her work from Fancy Dress, Ghana was included in the Venice Biennale, 2013 in the exhibition the “Encyclopedic Palace”. Galembo received a Guggenheim Foundation grant 2014, a Senior Fulbright Research Award to photograph ‘Kings, Chiefs and Women of Power, Nigeria’ 1994 and Artists’ Fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts 1996, 2010, 2016. Ms. Galembo is a Professor Emeritus at the University at Albany, State U of NY department of Art and Art History.
