Starting in February, join pro photographer JIM LAFFERTY on the last Saturday of each month for a series of digital photography crash courses. Brush up on your skills, get inspired to try something new, and learn insider techniques to take your work to the next level. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned shooter, these hands-on sessions will give your photography a fresh perspective. Each month, Jim will focus on building a particular skill set. Join one session, or come along for the full series – it’s up to you!

February 22, 12-3pm – Camera Basics
Aperture, shutter speed, metering & exposure tools, general autofocus overview, what’s and why’s of lens choices.

March 29, 12-3pm – From Camera to Computer
Whether you are shooting corporate headshots, or making self-portraits, this class will cover how to integrate tethering seamlessly into your workflow using CaptureOne or Lightroom.

April 26, 12-3pm – Portrait Lighting 101
From faces to full bodies and contextual portraits, putting light where we want it to get the best results, introduction to various lighting modifiers for portraiture.

May 31, 12-3pm – How to Shoot on Location
Setting up a mobile studio using compact strobes – strategies for a lightweight, single-person lighting setup ideal for use in real spaces & outdoors.

June 28, 12-3pm – Lighting 102
More advanced lighting principles – e.g. reading shadows and tells on the subject’s face, lighting diagrams/journaling, reverse engineering lighting in others’ photos.

About Jim:
JIM LAFFERTY resides in the Hudson Valley hamlet of Accord while keeping a studio in Brooklyn, where he produces work in commercial fashion, beauty, and dance. A master of his craft, Lafferty has worked alongside some of the best photographers and production crews in the business, including several seasons with the Saturday Night Live photo crew; in-house at The Space and Industria studios; and freelancing for production companies like Walter Schupfer, Droga5, A+, and LTwo. His photo clients include Maybelline, Converse, Uniqlo, Stitch Fix, and Marc Fisher, and he has produced numerous editorials and covers for Dance Media, photographing great performers from world-renowned dance companies.
