On Thursday, August 21, we welcome Annelise Duque and Gi (Ginny) Huo (current Woodstock AIRs) to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Duque will share images and videos from her practice. Her work, which spans photography, collage, performance, and archival research, explores diasporic place-making through physical and emotional investigations of the photographic object. She will share from her ongoing projects Rhyming Bodies and the Philippine Sea, and Looking With a Needle. These bodies of work, which take a special interest in craft and women’s work, invite intergenerational connection, close looking, and a nonhierarchical approach to art making.
Huo will be sharing current works in process. Huo’s work considers the legacies of belief systems and its geopolitical impact through mapping narratives of land and sites. Inspired by survival techniques found in nature, the work draws parallels practiced in human form. The work navigates through translation/interpretation, perception/truth, and the systematic mechanisms of selling a fantasy. Ginny will have copies of their work Calling/부름, as well as their Here’s to Believing zine, available for sale.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Annelise Duque is an Filipino-American artist working in photography, collage, performance, and video. She returns to memory and inherited histories, as the impetus to her work is a desire for intergenerational connection. Duque takes a particular interest in the body as a rich grounds for inquiry and the construction of identity, and is driven by questions of inheritance, ancestry, and diasporic place-making. Her work has been shown by The Utah Museum of Contemporary Arts, where she was the museum’s artist-in-residence, Tropical Contemporary Gallery, Rio Gallery, and Humble Arts Foundation. In 2021, she was a Visual Arts fellow with the Utah Division of Arts & Museums. She is currently based in Columbus, Ohio.
Gi (Ginny) Huo is an artist and educator thinking on the intentions of what people believe, the legacies of religious systems and its geopolitical impact. Huo works across mediums in sculpture, video, artists books, drawing, photography, and printmaking and has exhibited in places such as The Drawing Center, Socrates Sculpture Park, Baxter St CCNY, and The Smithsonian Archives of American Art. In the past decade, Huo has created and facilitated programs for the Education and Public Programs departments at The Studio Museum in Harlem, the New Museum, Parsons School of Design, CUNY College of Staten Island, and has participated in residencies such as Smack Mellon, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and is currently the Princeton Arts Fellow.
