The exhibition Photo Drawings will debut Ernest Shaw’s new series of “no- self portraits,” which, as he suggests, closes the circle of what might be seen as two divergent paths of the artist’s life – working with people in his therapy practice and making art over the past 50+ years.
The exhibit opens on October 26 at Aaron Rezny Studio in the Midtown Arts District (MAD), 76 Prince Street in Kingston, NY, with the artist in conversation with Lynn Woods from 4-5 pm and opening reception from 5-8 pm. In a special Kaffeeklatsch event in Kingston, Ernest Shaw will also be giving a gallery talk on December 14 at 1pm. Join us for coffee and sweets while listening to Ernie talk about his multilayered art that defies any one discipline.
While all mediums will be represented as part of an artist’s retrospective, the show will largely focus on recent work, which is the process of integrating photography, drawing and painting; the artist refers to these pieces as “photo drawings,” hence, the name of the exhibit.
Photo Drawings is being shown with the support of Center For Photography at Woodstock. A limited edition print from the show will be on sale after the opening, with proceeds going to CPW.

These are not traditional self portraits, observing facial features and expressions, but rather portraits that are caught in the mutable moments of change and transformation. The faces marry photography, drawing, sculpture and painting, melding these portraits into how the artist beholds the world, transfixing and engaging in the process. The portraits emerge from the nature of impermanence and a world in constant flux, where nothing can ever be made to stand still. Because the nature of time is always passing, there can be no fixed, solid, abiding self, but a moment-to-moment engagement with presence.
