Film and film cameras are very different from the digital medium and therefore, create very different photographs. Because they do less for us, we need to understand how they function, their unique capabilities, and how we can optimize their use.
This class is designed for those who want to improve their skills with analog photography. It is both a detailed dive into traditional 35mm, 120, and 4×5 cameras and film and an opportunity to work with new formats, such as 120 or 4×5. In addition the class will explore ways to create innovative photographs using multiple exposure, cross-processing, and by altering the film’s surface.
WHAT TO BRING: Participants are encouraged to bring their own cameras. There will also be 35mm, 120, and 4×5 cameras available to use.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
CHARLES PURVIS graduated from the Art Center College of Design in 1981 and has worked extensively with 35, 120, 4×5, 8×10, and 20×24 cameras and film and Polaroid since 1975. From 1985 through 2006 he was one of the top advertising photographers in New York City, creating groundbreaking imagery for a wide variety of internationally known clients. He’s still creating almost entirely with film.
