Loss comes to us all. Unable to prepare adequately for the eventual loss, many of us spend all too much time fretting about what is to come. Diverging from the preemptive emotional shutdown, the artists in CPW’s newest exhibition, Here Today, encourage us to keep our eyes and hearts on the present, and to celebrate what we have in the young and the old, the tangible and intangible.
This celebration is at once liberating and soul soothing. Age is just one of the many factors in our life’s journey, interwoven with rich experiences, friendships, fears and courage. Life is a sacred gift, not to be minimized in importance even as it slows down to a different pace.
The four women featured in this exhibition do not make light of the complications and challenges that can come with advanced age. There are those who feel betrayed by their bodies, who feel frustrated by their forgetfulness and absentmindedness, who mourn the loss of their spouses, family or friends. These photographs present context, a fascination with the physicality of age, a celebration of daily rituals that keeps people grounded.
The photographs introduce us to others through their surroundings, their personal rituals, and their relationships. We meet their caregivers, their spouses, their children, thereby getting to know them as mothers, fathers, lovers, or neighbors from the viewpoint of those who support them or have the benefit of keeping their company. Notes written to capture fleeting thoughts or sudden insights giving us the occasional glimpse beyond the surface.
Each photograph serves to strengthen the bond to these quiet lives. Each reverberates with the message that our every breath connects us with a life that is still here today and deserves to be celebrated as such.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
JUDI BOMMARITO is a Detroit-based documentary photographer and adjunct instructor at the College for Creative Studies. She takes great pride in her years as the lead mentor of the Focus:HOPE Excel after-school photography program. Whether documenting a person, building or landscape, Judi’s work articulates a keen awareness of the passage of time and invokes a contemplation of the human condition. KAYLYNN DEVENEY is a lecturer in the Belfast School of Art at Ulster University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She holds a master’s degree in documentary photography and a practice-based Ph.D. in photography, both from the University of Wales, Newport. KayLynn’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in permanent collections including those of The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Illinois, Light Work in Syracuse, New York, and the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. KayLynn has authored two photographic books. In 2007 Princeton Architectural Press published The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings. In 2015, All You Can Lose Is Your Heart was published by Kehrer Verlag. In 2008, KayLynn received an artist grant from the Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation. In 2015, she exhibited work in the Dali International Photography Exhibition in China and received the Redpoll Trophy. kaylynndeveney.com
LYDIA GOLDBLATT’s series Still Here was published as an artist monograph by Hatje Cantz, and is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum National Art Library. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Felix Nussbaum Museum, Germany, Somerset House, London, National Museum Gdansk, Poland, and the GoEun Museum of Photography, South Korea. She was awarded the Grand Prix at 2014’s Tokyo International Photography Festival. www.lydiagoldblatt.com
JANE PARADISE, a Provincetown MA, photographic artist, is represented by Alden Gallery in Provincetown and Galatea Fine Art (Boston). Her photographs have been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the United States and internationally. She’s received multiple awards as well as being a 2017 and 2014 Photolucida finalist. Her photographs are published in the book Strength and Grace: Elegy for Love and in Summertime, a Chronicle book. www.janeparadise.com
