ANNOUNCING 2019 ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE
The Center for Photography at Woodstock is pleased to announce our 2019 artists-in-residence, selected by a guest panel including Darren Ching (Klompching Gallery), Hamidah Glasgow (The Center for Fine Art Photography), and David Gonzalez (The New York Times). A total of eight residencies were awarded to visual artists working in photography and related media: Maha Alasaker (Brooklyn, NY), Lola Flash (New York, NY), Kei Ito (Baltimore, MD), Ervin A. Johnson (Chicago, IL), Vikesh Kapoor (Los Angeles, CA), Dionne Lee (Oakland, CA), Rachel Liu (San Jose, CA), Susana Raab (Washington, DC), and one Critical Studies Residency was awarded to Fayemi Shakur (Newark, NJ).
Every year, the applications are of such high quality, that the finalists are chosen by the slimmest of margins. So, it is our great pleasure to share the next 11 highest scoring applicants, whom we felt deserved Honorable Mentions, though we were unable to offer them residencies in 2019. Each will receive a complimentary one-year membership to CPW: Jonathan Castillo, Tamara Cedré, Natalie Eddings, Ginny Huo, Leslie Jean-Bart, Sangsuk Silvia Kang, Juliana Kasumu, Gabriel Martinez, Lissa Rivera, Kali Spitzer, and Jiawei Zhao.
CPW’s artists-in-residence each participate in four to six week residencies. They receive honoraria, housing, 24/7 access to CPW’s newly updated digital imaging lab, recently renovated black-and-white darkroom, and library of over 1,400 monographs and photo-related publications, as well as critical and technical support. Located within walking distance of CPW, our artist house provides private bedrooms and ample shared living spaces, as well as a large shared studio workspace. Now in its twentieth year, CPW’s residency program is unique in its longstanding commitment to diversity within the field of photography, and its criticality to the contemporary discourse on photography.

CPW’s Artist-in-Residence Program receives support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts with support from Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, the Milton & Sally Avery Foundation, The Gunk Foundation, and Canson Infinity. In addition, the purchase of CPW’s artist house was made possible through the extraordinary generosity from the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation, the Thompson Family Foundation, Howard and Ellen Greenberg, Dennis Gatto and his children Greg & Katha, and generous donations from over 100 individual donors.
