Returning to CPW this winter, spend three immersive days working alongside seasoned photography director JACQUELINE BATES to learn the fundamentals of editorial photography, beginning with an understanding of what is needed to produce images for publication in today’s media. Students will be able to demonstrate an ability to think as visual journalists by finding stories, pitching them, and creating original work during the workshop, leaving with a clear understanding how to shape an idea into a story. There will also be time for individual critique and portfolio feedback from Jacqueline as well as special guests.
This workshop was both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Jackie shared so much practical insight, from how to pitch a story to how to collaborate with editors and shape a visual narrative. I learned so much from her, and the guest sessions were inspiring as well. I left with a much clearer vision for my project, and it immediately became stronger. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
JACQUELINE BATES is the photography director of Opinion at The New York Times. She was the founding photography director at The California Sunday Magazine, which won National Magazine Awards for excellence in photography in 2016 and 2017, and Pop-Up Magazine. In 2024, Times Opinion was a National Magazine Award finalist in photography for the first time. Previously, she was the senior photo editor of W magazine and worked in the photo departments of Elle, Interview and Wired. Bates holds an M.F.A. in photography from the School of Visual Arts.
