JULIA VANDENOEVER: STILL BREATHING

The Center for Photography at Woodstock is pleased to announce Still Breathing, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Julia Vandenoever.
Exploring the depths, fragility, and meaning of one’s definition of “home”, Vandenoever allows us to look into her inner reflections and exploration of intrafamilial relationships. This exhibition, and Vandenoever’s in-depth work into her life experiences, holds space for the rediscovery of emotional grounding, especially at a time when closeness can feel increasingly further away.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Home is defined as the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family. This definition shifted for me when my identity as a daughter and sister both disappeared. Even though I am still a mother and a wife, I felt empty and unrooted.
Rather than a place, home is a feeling of comfort, love and protection. Still Breathing, is my rediscovery of being at home. It is the story of who I am and where I’ve been. It is sorting through the grief for what I wanted as a child and finding acceptance for what is.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Julia Vandenoever is an editorial, commercial and fine art photographer born in New York City and raised in New England. Vandenoever earned a B.A. in Art History from Smith College and went on to attend the SALT Center for Documentary Studies in Portland, ME.
Vandenoever began working for Wendy Ewald’s Literacy Through Photography program, where she cemented her love for storytelling. Next, as a photo editor, she helped shape the visual aesthetic and storytelling for iconic magazines such as Backpacker, Skiing and Outside for more than a decade.
Vandenoever’s work has been shown at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Southeast Center for Photography, Colorado Photographic Arts Center and Pictura Gallery. She has attended the Eddie Adams Workshop, served as a visiting artist at Guttman College in New York, New York, as well as received a Community Support Art grant through the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art.
Vandenoever now lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband, two children, and her dog, Olive.
This solo exhibition is the culmination of reviewers’ selection process from the Members Show 2020 and will be presented as a hybrid exhibition with a virtual show as well as an onsite gallery installation.
