For June Photo Club, CPW is partnering with Kingston Film Foundation to screen The Battle of Algiers. Based on the real fight between Algerian rebels and colonial French forces, The Battle of Algiers is a visceral, dramatic commentary on colonialism and urban guerrilla warfare. Director Gilles Pontecorvo opted to shoot the film in a black and white “newsreel” style, and cast non-professional actors who had lived through the real battle, to add to the feeling of historical authenticity. Considered one of the greatest films ever made, The Battle of Algiers won the prestigious Golden Lion at the 1966 Venice Film Festival, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
