Pamphlets, chapbooks, and copyart have long served as vital tools for artists to foster new networks of communication. Their use of mass production technologies—such as offset lithography, photocopy and risograph—have long empowered poets, artists, and political activists to circulate their work and foster new exchanges outside the established norms of the institution.
Over the course of five weeks, VLADIMIR NAHITCHEVANSKY will guide artists as they explore the interplay between text and photography through pamphlet-style design and production in order to create mid-size print runs of their photo pamphlet. Students will gain hands-on experience using CPW’s digital press, various copy machines, letterpress equipment, and a range of binding machinery available at the Kingston-based printshop 1080PRESS. Students will also have access to view historical pamphlet materials, courtesy of the book dealers at Better Read Than Dead.
Other topics that will be covered include methods of distribution, binding techniques, where to source paper, and building InDesign layouts for imposition.
The primary goal of this class is to equip students with the skills and tools necessary to produce their own pamphlets. Each student will be allotted 100 uncut 25×38 sheets of 80lb white uncoated text paper to produce their run of pamphlets. In addition to class time, each student will meet one-on-one after the second session with Vladimir to develop individual project ideas, and open studio hours will be provided for production after the 4th session.

Day 1: Saturday, September 6, 11-3pm [Location: CPW LIBRARY / 1080PRESS]
Introduction to pamphlets / discussion of materials & methods available / simple binding options.
Day 2: Saturday, September 20, 11-3pm [Location: CPW Digital Media Lab]
Group crit of work / Discussion of project focus / Indesign tutorial / Begin layout
Day 3: Sunday, September 21, 10-5pm [Location: CPW Digital Media Lab]
Continue Layout / Indesign / Finalize Design and Create Imposition for printing.
Day 4: Saturday, Sept 27, 10-5pm [Location: CPW Digital Book Press / 1080PRESS]
Printing with Jackson Hardin on CPW Book Press / Letterpress Covers / Tip-ins: Group will be split in half on this day, one group scheduled for print in the morning at CPW, and one group at 1080press printing covers. Then the groups will switch mid-day.
Day 5: Saturday, Oct 4th 11-3pm [Location: CPW LIBRARY]
Finalize pamphlets / discussion on distribution.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN MATERIALS FEE: Each student will start with 125 parent sheets of 23×35” paper, which will allow for a variety of different design options and print runs (larger final trim size will yield less copies vs a smaller final trim size yielding more). Automated folding, and saddle stitching will be available to students at no additional charge, whereas add-ons such as letterpress and foil stamping are available at an additional fee based on the scope of the project. Students will be invited to create their 4-24 page pamphlets either grayscale or CMYK, but CMYK will incur an additional fee which will be invoiced upon printing (.30 per 8.5 x 11). Cover paper, if different from the parent sheet paper, will need to be provided by the student.
