The Photobook II – FAQ’s

Will students have a book to share with the world at the end of this course?
Short answer: YES. Long answer: Yes, but this largely depends on the student. Self-motivated individuals will thrive in the environment this course fosters. Students will have access to equipment for printing books, a library of photo books and zines to inspire ideas, plenty of space to spread out in our new Dederick facility, and the necessary tools to prepare images for a book. Additionally, they’ll work alongside a supportive group of artists, all under the guidance of the talented and insightful instructor Adrianna Ault, a published artist herself.

Are book materials included?
No, students will be responsible for their own paper, cover, and binding materials. Each book made by students will be unique and there are many options for paper, size, and binding that will be introduced. Students will be able to securely store materials at CPW for the duration of the class. Resources and guidance for sourcing paper, covers, and binding materials will be provided.

Is ink covered in the tuition?
No, but students receive special discounts on printing in the Print Studio and Digital Media Lab.

What kind of photographic project is this class designed for?
This class is designed for photographers to explore the medium of the photobook as an artistic expression. This doesn’t mean it needs to be a large project. This class gives students the opportunity to learn how to make a book or booklet of their work that transcends the single image.

Will there be one-on-one time with the instructor?
Yes! About 35% of class time will be devoted to focusing on individual projects through both individual and group critiques/feedback, as well as hands-on workshopping of ideas. There are blocks of time built into the syllabus for individual meetings with Adrianna, available for signup as the class progresses. Additionally, Adrianna is available via email for questions outside of class time. For the remainder of the class, enrolled students can expect that 25% of Photobook II will consist of artist talks and visits, 25% on instruction, and 15% in learning how to use the equipment and working hands-on.

What skills should I have in order to take this class?
We will be utilizing Adobe software and a Canon digital press during this class, so any knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign will be helpful, but is not required. Templates will be provided, and the class will be assisted by a knowledgeable computer tech.

How much time should students plan to spend working outside of class time?
This will depend on each student, and the book(s) they intend to make. Students are also welcome to continue working on their books at CPW beyond the scope of the class’s 10 weeks. The Print Studio will be available to rent, and all CPW members receive 6 free hours/month in the Digital Media Lab.

What equipment will students have access to during class?
1) CPW’s Print Studio (Canon ImagePRESS v700, Epson P800, and hand binding tools).
2) CPW’s Digital Media Lab (Large and small format digital inkjet printers, scanners, print viewing areas).

What types of binding will students be introduced to?
Saddle stitching, pamphlet stitch, perfect binding, coil binding.

Can students access the facilities outside of class?
Yes, students will have access to the Print Studio during designated hours outside of class, Wednesday 3-5:30pm, or by special appointment (email education@cpw.org). The Digital Media Lab is available by appointment Wed-Fri 10-5pm, Saturday 11-6pm. One on one Digital Media Lab instruction must be scheduled ahead of time directly with labs@cpw.org

Who will benefit from taking this class?
Photographers and artists who are at the stage in their project where they have a solid understanding of the work and its themes, and are ready to make a book. This is a unique opportunity to take the next step from idea to final design to dummy and onwards to press!  Prerequisite: Photobook I or a solid idea for a book with most of the editing in its final stages. Photobook I will run again in Fall 2025.
