Hye-Ryoung Min: Re-membrance of the Remembrance

“What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it,” Gabriel García Márquez wrote in his autobiography. Artist Hye-Ryoung Min introduces his words as an invitation to re-experience a past of a different time and different place. Specifically, her photographic series, Re-membrance of the Remembrance, revisits a past of her younger self in the form of over seventy meticulously written diaries, and re-imagines this past through the eyes of adult maturity.
These contemplative explorations, captured during a residency at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, draw her inwards while also anchoring her within the tactile experience of her rustic settings. The resulting images are quiet musings that suggest a whirlwind tour of her life, only to see her stand firmly in the present. Respectfully acknowledging her younger view points, she resists their siren call. Here, memory serves as seed to new beginnings.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hye-Ryoung Min is a South Korean photographer living and working in NYC. She received her MPS from School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Her work explores the intersection between human relations and the inner self. Whether she is observing the mundane lives of strangers on the street; the comings and goings of her neighbors as seen through the windows of her home; the fleeting expressions of her niece; the evolving landscape of a city or the more than seventy diaries, which she has kept over the past twenty-six years, Hye-Ryoung continues to find in different subjects a reflection of her deeper self.
Among other shows, her work has been exhibited at: The Bronx Documentary Center, NEWSPACE Center for Photography, the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography, the Center for Fine Art Photography, Griffin Museum of Photography and Photoville in the United States; Seoul Museum of Art, Sejong Art Center, Gallery Lux and Gallery Comma in Seoul; GoEun Museum of Photography in Busan; and Benaki Museum in Greece. Her works are included in the Permanent Collections of The Center for Fine Art Photography and GoEun Museum of Photography.
She was an artist in residence at Woodstock Byrdcliffe in 2015 and at FotoVisura Lodge in 2014. Her first monograph Re-membrance of the Remembrance was published by Datz Press in 2018.
Among others, her works have been published in the Huffington Post, Conscientious, Photographers Quarterly, L’Oeil de la Photographie, Lenscratch, Nueva Luz, Foto Visura, aCurator, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, GQ, VOGUE, W and more.
