2018 WOODSTOCK AIR
The Center for Photography at Woodstock is pleased to announce our 2018 artists-in-residence, selected by a guest panel including Lisa Henry, Independent Curator and Consultant for Riverside Art Museum, and Libby Pratt, Director of Baxter Street Camera Club of New York. A total of eight residencies were awarded to artists working in photography and related media: Sophia Nahli Allison (Durham, NC), Dannielle Bowman (Brooklyn, NY), Rocio De Alba (Queens, NY), L. Kasimu Harris (New Orleans, LA), Will Matsuda (Queens, NY), Joshua Rashaad McFadden (Atlanta, GA), Daniel Ramos (Chicago, IL), and Jade Thiraswas (New Orleans, LA).
Every year, the applications are of such high quality, that the finalists are chosen by the slimmest of margins. So, for the first time in the 19 years since launching our residency program, it is our great pleasure to share the next 12 highest scoring applicants, whom we felt deserved Honorable Mentions, though we were unable to offer them residencies in 2018. Each will receive a complimentary one year membership to CPW: Francis Almendarez, Shikeith Cathey, Tamara Cedre, Goseong Choi, Erica Deeman, Anthony Moussa Hamboussi, Pao Her, Lorena Molina, Eduardo Rivera, Nina Robinson, John Steck, Jr., and Zhiyuan Yang.
CPW’s artists-in-residence each participate in four to six week residencies. They receive honoraria and housing, 24/7 access to CPW’s digital imaging lab, newly renovated black-and-white darkroom, and library of over 1,400 monographs and photo-related publications, as well as critical and technical support. Located within walking distance of CPW, our artist house provides private bedrooms and ample shared living spaces, as well as a large shared studio workspace. CPW’s residency program is unique in its longstanding commitment to diversity within the field of photography, and its criticality to contemporary discourse on photography.

SOPHIA NAHLI ALLISON
Sophia Nahli Allison (Durham, NC) is an experimental documentary filmmaker, educator and time traveler. Born in 1987 and a native of South Central Los Angeles, she is interested in recontextualizing the past, examining the present, and reimagining the future. Through her work she conjures the psychic space of black women while documenting the intersection of fiction and non-fiction. She is passionate about excavating and reimagining dreams, ancestral memories, and archival existence. She holds an MA in Visual Communication and a BA in Photojournalism. She was named the Student Video Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographer Association in 2017. She was a participant of the Eddie Adams Workshop, the New York Times Student Journalism Institute, and the 2nd Annual New York Times Lens Blog Portfolio Review. She has interned at several newspapers and taught photo and video to youth in Chicago and Los Angeles. She is a grateful recipient of the 2014 Chicago 3Arts Award.

ROCIO DE ALBA
Rocio de Alba (Queens, NY) received a BFA from School of Visual Arts, and is an international award winning book designer. She has received grants from the Queens Council and the New York Foundation for the Arts, as well as public funding from the Department of Cultural Affairs. Her work was featured on CNN, New York Times, PDN, and L’Oeil de la Photographie. Group exhibitions include Flowers Gallery, Baxter Street Camera Club, CPW, Colorado Photographic Arts, Blue Sky, and Kolga Photo Festival in Tbilisi. Her handmade monograph Miracle Baby, which documented her son, was exhibited at the Elder Museum in Nebraska, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Festival Documental in Barcelona, and is currently distributed by Fall Line Press in Atlanta. De Alba’s exhibition, Honor Thy Mother, was at the Griffin Museum of Photography, then shown at Providence Center for Photographic Arts, and China’s Yixian Photo Festival, with more dates to be announced.

L. KASIMU HARRIS
L. Kasimu Harris (New Orleans, LA) is a storyteller who uses writing, photography and video to push narratives. He has shown in 20 group exhibitions across America, two abroad and three solo photography exhibitions. This summer, Harris’ War on the Benighted series is a part of Changing Course: Reflections on New Orleans Histories, a group exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Harris’ work modulates among photojournalism, documenting culture and constructed realities to tell stories of underrepresented communities in New Orleans and beyond. Harris’ feature for Edible New Orleans was selected for the book “Best Food Writing 2016.” Currently, he is a food columnist for the Bitter Southerner. Harris has images in several publications including Dandy Lion: The Black Dandy and Street Style, by Shantrelle P. Lewis by Aperture. He holds a BBA in entrepreneurship from Middle Tennessee State University and a MA in Journalism from the University of Mississippi.

JOSHUA RASHAAD MCFADDEN
Joshua Rashaad McFadden (Atlanta, GA) is originally from Rochester, NY. He holds a BFA from Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina and an MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. His work explores African American male identity, masculinity, notions about the father figure, and the photographic archive, by providing a frame of reference that articulates the identities of Black men. He was named one of the top emerging talents in the world by LensCulture and received the first place International Photography Award (IPA) for After Selma, a series that conveys McFadden’s response to numerous recent incidents of police brutality. He also won the first place IPA award in 2016 for Come to Selfhood, a project examining African American manhood. McFadden’s work has been published in The New York Times, Time Magazine, Slate Magazine, Travel + Leisure, and Smithsonian Magazine.

DANIEL RAMOS
Daniel Ramos (Chicago, IL) graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Photography in 2003, and studied for an MFA at California College of the Arts for one year in 2007. He was awarded the Jack Jaffe Documentary Scholarship in 2000, and received a Graduate Merit Scholarship from California College of the Arts in 2006. His photographs from the Sloan Valve series are in the permanent collection of Leo Burnett Worldwide, and have been published in the Center for Documentary Studies’ 25 under 25: Up-And-Coming American Photographers. He recently won second place for the national “El Tiempo” award by CuartoOscuro magazine in Mexico. Ramos’ work was also selected by Elizabeth Ferrer for CPW’s Photography Now 2018 exhibition. For the last two years, he has taught a class on Documentary photography at L.C.I. in Monterrey, Mexico. He currently lives and works in Chicago, IL, and Monterrey, Mexico.

JADE THIRASWAS
Jade Thiraswas (b.1993) is a Thai-American visual storyteller. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised between there and Southeast Asia. Her work celebrates the complexities of cultural identity, community, and representation while working against a history of colonialism, otherness, and patriarchy in the documentary photographic tradition. She often works collaboratively with her subjects, challenging notions of artistic authority and subjectivity. Her ongoing project “Young Cash Karen” follows a tight-knit brotherhood of young refugees from Myanmar who have resettled in Upstate New York. Jade attended New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in high school, going on to earn her BFA in photography and art history at Memphis College of Art in 2015, and her MFA in photography & related media at Rochester Institute of Technology in 2018. Her work has been exhibited in numerous spaces nationally and internationally. She has been selected to participate in the New York Times Portfolio Review, the Women Photograph Workshop at Photoville, Angkor Photo Festival Workshops, Chico Hot Springs Portfolio Review, and was an artist in residence at The Center for Photography at Woodstock, New York.
