RUTH LAUER-MANENTI: REMNANTS

The Center for Photography at Woodstock is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Remnants by Ruth Lauer-Manenti. This exhibition kicks off a series that highlights CPW members. Lauer-Manenti was chosen as Reviewers’ Pick during the Woodstock Portfolio Reviews in 2019.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I focus on fragments, in this series, to communicate expressions of loss, memory, history and decay in a contemplative manner. I am making images that illuminate fragility and survival as a tangible presence, through the use of everyday objects and natural light. Like a poem made up of verses, I view the world in layers, quietly suggesting a story that rekindles an affection for what was, is, or can be.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ruth Lauer-Manenti lives in a cabin in the woods in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Her background is in painting and drawing, but fifteen years ago she inherited a K.B. Canham large-format camera from someone she greatly admired. She taught herself how to use the camera and gradually accomplished in photography that which she had been striving for through drawing and painting. She gathers much of her inspiration from looking at drawings and paintings continuously over decades. Her mother was also an artist. She had a wealth of talent and worked steadily throughout her life, yet her number one role was to take care of her family. Sadly, she left behind a legacy of unwanted, unpublished, unknown work. Lauer-Manenti realizes, now that her mother has passed away, that part of her determination as an artist is to honor her mother and to create a continuum.
She has developed a strong spiritual life and practice, since breaking her neck in a car crash at the age of twenty, and adapted a simpler and more ritualistic way of life than she had known. She has made annual trips to India for the last thirty-five years to study yoga, meditation, and Sanskrit. She received a BFA from SVA in NYC and an MFA in drawing, printmaking and painting from the Yale School of Art in 1994, where she later taught. She also taught at Dartmouth College. She has exhibited at the Bill Maynes Art Gallery, the Lower East Side Printshop, John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Paula Cooper Gallery, The Griffin Museum of Photography, John Davis Gallery, and Le Salon Vert in Switzerland. Her work has been collected by the New York Public Library as well as many private collections including Lois Conner, Louise Fishman, An-My Lê, Frances Barth, Bruce Gagnier and Sylvia Mangold.

The exhibition Remnants is on view concurrently with the 2020 Members Show. CPW’s exhibitions are free and open to the public due to the continued support from the New York Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Art, the Warhol Foundation, Joy of Giving Something, the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation, our members and other supporters.
CPW galleries open Thursday – Sunday, 12 noon – 5pm and by appointment. Please note that special hours apply during the holidays. Educational tours are available upon request.
