Mary Virginia Swanson is an advisor, author, and educator who helps artists find the strength in their work, identify appreciative audiences and present their work in an informed, professional manner. She is a respected mentor who has guided countless photographers through the changes taking place in nearly every aspect of our industry. Swanson has worked in fine art, documentary, photojournalism, and licensing arenas, with vast experience in multiple markets. Swanson co-authored with Darius Himes the acclaimed Publish Your Photography Book: Revised & Updated (Princeton Architectural Press, 2014). She continues to stay current on the growing market for photobooks, reflecting both the relative ease of self-publishing and the rise of the collectible photobook. Her current writing project is an updated guide to understanding and implementing a strategic plan to place photographs into today’s changing marketplace.

The Professional Practices Artist Network (PPAN) provides artists with the skills, support structure and understanding of the industry to greatly accelerate their careers. The PPAN program was made possible by a project grant from the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation. Additional funding was provided by the Joy of Giving Something Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts.
