CPW is pleased to announce that the exhibitions Housed and Altered, exhibitions featuring photographs by past participants of CPW’s residency program, WOODSTOCK AIR, were on show at the Tremaine Art Gallery at Hotchkiss School for a campus exclusive show from March 31 – April 30, 2022.
The Hotchkiss School is an independent boarding school located in Lakeville, Connecticut. Founded in 1891, the School provides an education of academic distinction to 600 students in grades 9 through 12, and to a small number of postgraduates. Students at Hotchkiss come from across the United States and around the world. Graduates attend many of the most selective universities and colleges.
Woodstock AIR was created in 1999 to support photography-based artists of color, and to expand the dialogue around diversity, race, and identity in the context of social justice. CPW is located in the nearby Hudson Valley region of New York, on the edge of the Catskill Mountain Park.
Housed / Altered showcases photographs that emphasize the experimental nature of the creative process, as well as photographs created by residents at CPW’s artist house, purchased in 2017. Participating artists include Nydia Blas, Dannielle Bowman, Jillian Marie Browning, Jeremy Dennis, Eyakem Gulilat, Antonia Kuo, Alma Leiva, Pixy Liao, Rachel Liu, Will Matsuda, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Sheida Soleimani, Leonard Suryajaya, Motohiro Takeda, Rodrigo Valenzuela, Claire Warden, and Suné Woods. WOODSTOCK AIR: HOUSED
CPW rented its artist house from 2010-2012, prior to purchasing it in 2017. The beautiful light in the studio is hard to resist for photographers. Again and again artists have taken beautiful photographs there, stunning examples of the powerful work created by often underrepresented artists. As of 2019, when Housed was presented at CPW, 128 artists had participated in the Woodstock AIR program. “What takes place during an artist workspace residency is sacred,” former CPW Executive Director Ariel Shanberg wrote in 2014.
WOODSTOCK AIR: ALTERED
Woodstock AIR artists spend their time in Woodstock producing new work, experimenting with their processes, or editing existing work. Experimentation during their residencies, be it in process, materials, scale or concept, is highly encouraged. Originally presented at CPW in 2019, Altered was curated by Jan Nagle.
A special thanks to the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation, the Thompson Family Foundation, Howard and Ellen Greenberg, Dennis Gatto and his children Greg & Katha, and over 100 individual donors, the purchase of the artist house was possible. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Joy of Giving Something Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts continue to support CPW’s Woodstock AIR program.

These exhibitions will be viewable as a virtual walkthrough via Matterport, made possible with funds from the NYSCA Electronic Media/Film in Partnership with Wave Farm: Media Arts Assistance Fund, with the support of the New York State’s Governor’s Office and the New York State Legislature.
