Kingston, NY —The Center for Photography at Woodstock is pleased to announce it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to receive a Grants for Arts Projects award of $20,000. This grant will support CPW’s acclaimed Woodstock AIR, the oldest lens-based residency devoted primarily to artists of color. This grant is one of 1,251 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling nearly $28.8 million that were announced by the NEA as part of its first round of fiscal year 2023 grants.

nationwide,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “Projects such as this one, with the Center for Photography at Woodstock, strengthen arts and cultural ecosystems, provide equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice, and contribute to the health of our communities and our economy.”
Woodstock AIR, CPW’s nationally recognized artist-in-residence, was established in 1999, and since then has seen over 150 artists pass through its program. It is committed to providing direct support to artists of color working with photography and to expanding the critical dialogue around diversity, race, and identity in the context of social justice. This one-month residency gives ten photographers the time and space to break new ground, complete ongoing projects, and advance their artistic vision. On December 13, CPW announced its annual open call for Woodstock Air 2023. Distinguished jurors are Makeda Best, the Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography at Harvard Art Museums; Samantha Box, 2020/2021 AIR; Candice Hopkins, Executive Director of Forge Project, Taghkanic, NY; and Lola Flash, 2019 AIR.
“We greatly appreciate this recognition and generous support from the NEA for our artist residency at Woodstock AIR,” states Brian Wallis, CPW Executive Director, “particularly since this public funding immediately assists artists and photographers, and helps to provide for them the time and space necessary for creativity.”
