Collaborative Zines and the Art of Image Sequencing with Juan Madrid and Veronica Melendez

Collaborative Zines and the Art of Image Sequencing
Juan Madrid and Veronica Melendez

Saturday, July 8 – Sunday, July 9, 2023
10:00 am – 5:00 pm

In this workshop, artists Veronica Melendez and Juan Madrid will guide attendees through the process of making a collaborative zine, hosted at a Kingston-based print shop. Using their own photographs, students will work together to create a cohesive and unique sequence of their works that will be designed and printed as a small edition publication to be released at the first ever CPW Photobook and Zine Fair!

Veronica and Juan will share examples from their own libraries of collaborative published works alongside their own collaborative publishing projects. They will lead discussions and exercises going over how to conceptualize zines and sequence images. The goal for the first day is to work together to make a rough sequence of the collaborative zine and print a book dummy.

On the second day students will continue to sharpen the sequence and work on the design and layout. We will print a small edition of the zine, taking care to examine how different materials and bindings can change how a publication feels. Students will be provided with printers, scanners, computers, paper and toner, and staple binders. Everyone will leave with a few copies for their own library and the publication will be available at the upcoming CPW Photobook and Zine Fair, part of the First Annual Kingston Photo Festival, scheduled for July 21–23.

What to bring: Digital image files (on a flash drive or phone) or printed/collaged artworks under 8.5 x 11 inches.
