CPW is teaming up with commercial photographer Jim Lafferty for a three-day, everything-you-need-to-know course. Through hands-on learning, demos, and lectures, Jim will pull from his 15 years experience as photographer, photo assistant, and digital tech in the NYC photo industry, to equip each participant with the tools necessary to excel in the field.

What to expect:
DAY ONE: Commercial Photo Studio Fundamentals (Beginner to Intermediate)
Friday, January 12, 10-4pm:
This first day will provide an overview of the various crew roles on a commercial photo set, providing foundational knowledge and insights into working within the commercial and editorial photo industry. We will cover the basics of what is required for each role (assistant, digitech, lighting tech) and dive into exploring the core tools employed by each – from lighting & grip, on-set dynamics, to a brief overview of tethered digital capture using Capture One. Class is limited to 15 participants.
DAY TWO: Studio Lighting II Intensive (Intermediate to Advanced)
Saturday, January 13, 10-4pm:
Building on the basics learned in day 1 of the series, these lessons touch on different lighting styles, essential modifiers, and the required gear and workflow for the most common lighting scenarios on set: beauty & portraiture; full length fashion & movement; tabletop still life. You will leave this workshop with the confidence to employ strobe lighting in multiple scenarios. We will work with an array of Profoto strobes, from nimble on-location gear to the robust, studio standard pack and head system. Class is limited to 15 participants.
DAY THREE: Tethered Workflow using Capture One (Intermediate to Advanced)
Sunday, January 14, 10-4pm:
Capture to backup and everything in between! If you are looking to lessen the anxiety of shooting tethered, or looking for work on set as a digitech, this class will provide a firm grasp on the workflow fundamentals needed to ensure a smooth shoot. We will cover Capture One’s interface and core components; optimal review and backup strategies, including wireless image viewing; text & composition overlays, and live view. Class is limited to 15 participants.
Where:
This course will take place at CPW’s new home at 25 Dederick in Kingston, NY. Parking is free.
Lunch:
There will be an hour lunch break at 12pm. There are many places that sell delicious food nearby, or you can bring your lunch. There is a refrigerator and microwave on site that participants will have access to.

About Jim Lafferty:
Jim Lafferty currently resides in the Hudson Valley hamlet of Accord while keeping a studio in Brooklyn, where he travels regularly to produce work in commercial fashion, beauty, and dance. Jim’s mastery of the craft has been largely self-initiated, shaped by years on set with some of the best photographers and production crews in the business – from working in-house at The Space & Industria studios, seasons with the SNL photo crew, to freelancing for production companies like Walter Schupfer, Droga5, A+, and LTwo. His photo clients include Maybelline, Converse, Uniqlo, Stitch Fix, and Marc Fisher, and he has produced numerous editorials and covers for Dance Media, with greats from world renowned dance companies.
