ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
BALDWIN LEE is a photographer and educator. His monograph Baldwin Lee (Hunters Point Press, 2022) is drawn from the nearly 10,000 black-and-white photographs Lee made, using a 4 x 5 view camera, with Black communities across the American South from 1983–89. That book was shortlisted for the 2023 Les Prix du Livre, Les Rencontres d’Arles and the 2022 Aperture Paris-Photo Photobook of the Year Award. Lee, who founded the University of Tennessee’s photography program in 1982, retired from teaching in 2014 and is currently professor emeritus. Lee received a BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972, where he studied photography with Minor White, and went on to receive an MFA from Yale University in 1975, where he studied with Walker Evans. Lee’s work is held in the permanent collections of many museums,  including the Eastman Museum, Rochester; The Morgan Library & Museum, New York; the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; and the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven.
