Join SAM MARGEVICIUS for a hands-on weekend workshop experimenting with the conception and production of picture frames. Participants will explore ways in which the photograph’s physical context offers an opportunity to extend meaning in the work. Beginning with discussion on theoretical approaches to design, followed by a practical exercise in image-form connection, and concluding with each participant designing and building their own frame, the workshop seeks to expand the artists’ perception of framing as a concept and as a form. No previous knowledge of woodworking or sculptural methods is required.
WHAT TO BRING: A variety of photographic prints or works on paper. These could include found images, prints on fabric, or anything 2D you’d like to experiment with. All sizes are encouraged. All other materials will be provided.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
SAM MARGEVICIUS is an artist working in and around photography. He builds systems of meaning through books, framing, installation, and performance. Sam’s work privileges process, emphasizing ideas that emerge in dialogue with materials, environments, and audience. He recently traveled to Lithuania, as the instructor for a workshop on framing at the MA program in photography at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. His solo show “Thinking Gets Me In Trouble,” was first exhibited at CPW Kingston in 2023 and again recently at Kintair Arts Gallery in Lithuania. Margevicius’ artist book Darkroom Drawing was published by Small Editions in 2021, and is held in libraries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA, and the Museum of Modern Art, NY.
