On Thursday, September 3, we welcome Robert Kalman to “Meet the Artist”. After January 6th, documentary portrait photographer Robert Kalman began approaching everyday Americans across the country, asking them, “What’s it like for you to be an American?” while offering to make their portrait using a large-format, eight-by-ten inch view camera. He also invited each person to write an answer to the question on a single notebook page. Their handwritten responses proved to be a mix of sincere, emotional expressions: pride, an acknowledged sense of privilege, anger, frustration, gratitude, deep ambivalence, even shame.

Join CPW’s Marina Chao and independent curator Colin Beattie for a conversation about what goes into bringing an exhibition to life, including how they entered the field, the differences between institutional and independent curating, and the challenges of putting a show together.

Join us for our next Conversations panel to celebrate the publication of Dead Letter Room (The Eriskay Connection, 2026), the new book by artist Allie Tsubota. Tsubota will be joined by Dr. Maggie Mustard, Assistant Curator of Photography in The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints & Photographs at the New York Public Library. Their discussion will focus on the making of the project, the histories it engages, and the evolving relationship between photography, memory, and place. Tsubota, whose work is currently in the CPW Upstate Photography Biennial was a 2023 CPW Woodstock Artist-in-Residence.
