Film and Film Cameras—the Basics of Analog Image Making

Tuesday, December 9, 2025
6-8pm
25 Dederick Street, Kingston, NY
FREE, and open to all

Film and film cameras are very different from digital cameras and create very different photographs. Because they do less for us, we need to understand how they function, their unique capabilities, and how we can optimize their use.

This Photo Club presentation, led by artist Charles Purvis, covers the basics of traditional 35mm, 120, and 4×5 cameras and film. Charles will cover how the cameras function, lenses, film-loading, exposure tips, and best use. He’ll present common film types, their structure, attributes, and suggestions for best use. Examples of the cameras and film will be on hand.

About Charles:
Charles Purvis graduated from the Art Center College of Design in 1981 and  has worked extensively with 35, 120, 4×5, 8×10, and 20×24 cameras and film and Polaroid since 1975. From 1985 through 2006 he was one of the top advertising photographers in New York City, creating groundbreaking imagery for a wide variety of internationally known clients. He’s still creating almost entirely with film.

About Photo Club:
CPW welcomes art lovers of all ages to join in learning new processes, discovering new work, and spending time with a diverse photographic community here in the Hudson Valley. Photo Club is free and open to the public.
