In this workshop series, JACKSON PORTER HARDIN will introduce students to a range of foundational bookbinding structures, providing in-depth demonstrations of craft techniques and hands-on guidance in their application. These workshops intend to introduce participants to the ‘rules’ of bookbinding, and develop the skills to creatively break those rules. Participants will also develop an understanding of the book form through exploration of material and structure.
In learning each binding method, participants will gain a deep understanding of paper grain, handling, cutting and folding, as well as explore a variety of adhesives and their uses, master sewn binding methods, and develop the confidence to plan and execute their own bookbinding projects. Each session will have opportunities for alteration in design, including binding structure variations, hard or soft cover, and choice of materials.
Prior experience in bookbinding is not required.
WHAT TO BRING: All materials are provided, however if students want to bring their own printed book blocks to bind, they should reach out to Jackson at bookpress@cpw.org to determine how their book will need to be designed and printed in order to accommodate the particular binding structure that they intend to use.

March 15, 10am-5pm – Pamphlet-Stitch
Pamphlet stitch is a non-adhesive binding using a hand-sewn stitch for binding folded paper sheets, and can be used to make a wide range of small to medium pamphlets, zines, or chapbooks.
Demonstration: 3-hole pamphlet stitch, 5-hole pamphlet stitch, Chain stitch

March 21, 10am-5pm – Accordion Variations
The accordion or concertina structure is a stitchless, continuous folded binding assembled with or without adhesive, that can lay flat and be creatively adapted in countless ways.
Demonstration: Accordion binding, Carousel variation, cover variations

March 28, 10am-5pm – Japanese Stab Binding
An ancient binding method, Japanese stab binding is a simple non-adhesive hand-sewn structure for binding single paper sheets, featuring an exposed spine with visible, decorative sewing.
Demonstration: Japanese 4-Hole Binding, Noble Binding, Tortoise Shell Binding, Hemp Leaf Binding

April 4, 10am-5pm – Drum-Leaf Binding
Drum leaf binding is a lay-flat structure ideal for displaying photographs and prints. Each page spread is a single folded sheet, and images can be printed across the gutter with no interruption, and works well for light-weight or fragile paper stocks.
Demonstration: Drum-Leaf binding, French Fold, Floating spine

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
JACKSON PORTER HARDIN is a Hudson Valley artist and educator. He is preoccupied with making sense of humanity as an ecological condition, through images, artist books, installations, and video. His work has been exhibited by Red Barn Gallery, the Society for Photographic Education (SPE), and Humble Arts Foundation. Hardin teaches at Ramapo College of New Jersey, and serves as the Book Press Coordinator at CPW.
