Shifting from our usual Tuesday evening meetup time, please join us this month on Wednesday, March 11th at 5:15pm for a special film screening in collaboration with Upstate Films. “Close Encounters with the Still Image,” the film series CPW runs in partnership with Upstate Films will screen Hale County This Morning, This Evening, at Upstate Films’ Midtown Kingston theater down the street from CPW.
“Close Encounters” features filmmakers whose work reflects a deep engagement with photography, either through the filmmakers’ training, visual language, or the archival images they weave into their work.
Academy Award Nominee – Best Documentary Feature. The film presents Daniel Collins and Quincy Bryant, two young African American men from rural Hale County, Alabama, over the course of five years. We experience the mundane and monumental, birth and death, the quotidian and the sublime, as we glimpse the complex ways the African American community’s collective image is integrated into America’s visual imagination. The camera peers from unconventional angles, lingers on images longer than they at first seem to deserve, ultimately revealing a new perspective. (dir. RaMell Ross, U.S., 2018, 76 min.)
