During September’s Photo Club, join CPW’s Marina Chao and independent curator Colin Beattie for a conversation about what goes into bringing an exhibition to life, including how they entered the field, the differences between institutional and independent curating, and the challenges of putting a show together. They will draw on their experience curating exhibitions such as the Upstate Photography Biennial and Give Me One Good Reason for Leaving the House, both currently on view at CPW. We’ll close the evening with questions from the audience.
About Marina Chao:
Marina Chao has previously held curatorial positions at the International Center of Photography and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. As assistant curator at ICP she organized the exhibition Multiply, Identify, Her (2018) and contributed to the publication Public, Private, Secret: On Photography and the Configuration of Self (Aperture and ICP, 2018). She was awarded a 2019 Curatorial Research Fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for a project exploring the intersections of image, language, and technology.
About Colin Beattie:
Colin Beattie is an artist and independent curator based in Poughkeepsie. His work explores the terminal aesthetics of the twenty-first century, as they are influenced by ecological, economic, and political instability. Colin’s practice addresses the marginalization of artistic labor within creative economies, and seeks collaborative strategies for artists to support one another at a time when institutional resources are becoming scarce.
Colin’s work has been presented in Lenscratch and Upstate Art Weekend. His writing has been featured in Dear Dave and the Cape Cod Compass. Colin’s most recent curatorial project, entitled “Give Me One Good Reason for Leaving the House,” is currently on view in CPW’s Community Gallery.
