Commitment to Social Justice and Inclusivity

Like many organizations and individuals, we have been deeply disturbed by recent targeted attacks on people of color and their right to peacefully protest societal injustice and systemic racism. As citizens who have enjoyed many privileges of society, we bear the responsibility to stand up for those who have been disadvantaged or attacked by that same system.

Twenty-one years ago, CPW made an institutional commitment to dedicate its artist-in-residence program, Woodstock AIR, to the discussion of diversity, race and social justice, and to provide direct support to artists of color. CPW established Woodstock AIR as a safe and nurturing place for the creation of new work, research and experimentation. The program supports artists in their creative process, while also acknowledging their significant contributions to the art world in general and the field of fine art photography specifically. Recent events and continued under-representation in the field have made it clear that programs such as Woodstock AIR are more important than ever, and that even more action is needed.

Today, CPW emboldens its commitment to inclusion and diversity. It is CPW’s mission to serve as a vital hub for dialogue and discovery in photography and related media. We work toward a future where the representation of all perspectives is not only welcomed but expected, where systemic wrongs are confronted with honesty and integrity, and where underrepresented artists can count on being heard and seen.

Since 1999, CPW has listened and learned from our artists in Woodstock AIR. Over 130 artists have participated in the program so far. The Woodstock AIR video library portrays dozens of artists and their art making practice, including Nydia Blas (seen above), John Edmonds, Juan Giraldo, Daesha Devón Harris, Kevin Miyazaki, Motohiro Takeda, and more. The video library serves as valuable research tool and is accessible for free.
