“My work is about beauty. I want the viewer to enjoy the beauty of the subject matter as captured in the photograph.“

1. Where are you from, and what is your background in photography? How did you get into photography?
I grew up in Akron, OH. Editorial, Journalism & Art. Got into photo by default changed majors in college and photography felt right.
2. What inspired you to make the work in Photography Now 2017? What is the work about? Please describe one piece, the evolution of the concept, and the process?
The work is about one word, Beauty. “Beauty will save the world” proclaimed the main character, Prince Myskin in Fyodor Dostoevesky’s philosophical novel The Idiot. My endeavor, entitled “Project Belvedere” (Italian for beautiful view), is my ongoing photographic mission that has the sole objective of capturing elements of beauty about the wide-ranging entities that are present among the land and scenery within the urban, suburban and rural areas of the ordinary world.Project Belvedere allows me to share this beauty that I have recorded as a photograph. The photograph “El Don Cocina Mexicana” was observed from the road, it caught my eye and entranced me. I photographed until I found the sweet spot of it’s beauty.
3. Much of the work in Photography Now 2017 seems to describe a distance between the subject and the viewer, a disconnection, and/or a dystopian situation. How do you think your work relates to these ideas?
I can’t speak to to that. My work is about beauty. I want the viewer to enjoy the beauty of the subject matter as captured in the photograph.
4. What is the one photograph you always wanted to make but never could?
That is a negative question that concludes with regret. I work just the opposite way. I don’t know what the that I will take, but I am certain that it will be beautiful.
