Through image and text, film and performance, and her many convenings with individuals across a multitude of disciplines, Carrie Mae Weems has created a complex body of work that centers on her overarching commitment to helping us better understand our present moment by examining our collective past. Major solo exhibitions of Weems’s work include Carrie Mae Weems: The Museum Series, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, and Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video, Frist Art Museum, Nashville, and traveled to: Portland Art Museum, Portland; Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland; Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford University; and the Guggenheim Museum, New York. She is represented in public and private collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Tate Modern, London, England; the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Weems was selected as the inaugural speaker for CPW’s Arnold Newman Lectures at Woodstock, and she is being celebrated as the 2020 honoree of CPW’s highest recognition, the Vision Award. Sophia Nahli Allison disrupts conventional documentary methods by reimagining the archives and excavating hidden truths. A meditation of the spirit, her work conjures ancestral memories to explore the intersection of fiction and non-fiction storytelling. She is a 2020 United States Artists Fellow in Film, was named the 2017 Student Video Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association, and was a 2014 Chicago 3Arts Award recipient. She has held residencies at MacDowell, The Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France, The Center for Photography at Woodstock, and POV Spark’s African Interactive Art Residency. Her short documentary A Love Song For Latasha was released on Netflix and premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and received the Grand Jury Documentary Prize at AFI Fest, along with Best Documentary Short awards at the New Orleans Film Festival, BlackStar Film Festival, and more including an IDA Documentary Awards Nomination. She received her Master’s Degree from UNC, and is currently working on her long-term project, Dreaming Gave Us Wings. website »

Sama Alshaibi’s photographs, videos and immersive installations examine the mechanisms of fragmentation in the aftermath of war and exile. They feature a female figure, often her own, that references a complex site of struggle and identification. Alshaibi’s work also complicates the coding of the Arab female body and confronts an image history of photographs and moving images through an Arab feminist perspective. Her monograph, Sama Alshaibi: Sand Rushes In (Aperture) features her eight-year Silsila series (debuted at the 55th Venice Biennale), which probes the human dimensions of migration, borders, and environmental demise. Emilie Boone specializes in the art and visual culture of the African Diaspora with particular research interests in photography. Her current manuscript engages the photographs of James Van Der Zee. Boone has contributed scholarship to the publications From Within and Without: The History of Haitian Photography and Towards an African Canadian Art History: Art, Memory, and Resistance, in addition to journals including History of Photography, American Art, and African Arts. Among her academic honors are a Metropolitan Museum of Art Chester Dale Fellowship, a National Portrait Gallery Smithsonian Fellowship, and a Fulbright at McGill University and the McCord Museum’s Notman Photographic Archives. Curatorial projects include a gallery rotation of photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a display of Autograph ABP’s Missing Chapter: Exhibition in a Box at Grace Gallery. Boone’s current appointment as an Assistant Professor at CUNY New York City College of Technology followed a Mellon Post-Doc at the Williams College Museum of Art, and the completion of her PhD in Northwestern University’s Department of Art History. website »

Dannielle Bowman received a BFA from The Cooper Union and an MFA from the Yale School of Art, where she was awarded the 2018 Richard Benson Prize. She was recently awarded the 2020 Aperture Portfolio Prize and was a contributor to the New York Times Magazine’s “1619 Project”. Bowman has been an artist-in-residence at Baxter Street at the Camera Club of New York; The Center for Photography at Woodstock; and PICTURE BERLIN. Mercedes Dorame, born in Los Angeles, California, received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and her undergraduate degree from UCLA. She calls on her Tongva ancestry to engage the problematics of (in)visibility and ideas of cultural construction. Dorame recently revived a Creative Capital Award and her work is part of the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Triton Museum, The Allen Memorial Art Museum, The de Saisset Museum, The Montblanc Foundation Collection, and The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum. She is the recipient of grants and fellowships from: the Montblanc Art Commission, the New York Foundation for the Arts, Loop Artist Residency, the James Phelan Award for California born visual artists, En Foco’s New Works Photography Fellowship Awards program, Galería de la Raza, for her solo exhibition there, the Harpo Foundation for a residency at the Vermont Studio Center, and from the Photography Department at the San Francisco Art Institute for her MFA Studies. Dorame was recently honored by UCLA as an outstanding alum of the last 100 years as part of their centennial initiative “UCLA: Our Stories Our Impact”, and was part of the Hammer Museum’s biennial Made in L.A. 2018. She has shown her work internationally. Elizabeth Ferrer is Chief Curator at BRIC, a multi-disciplinary arts organization in Brooklyn, as well as a scholar of Latinx and Mexican photography. At BRIC, she founded the BRIC Biennial and has curated major solo shows for such prominent Latinx artists as Juan Sánchez and Miguel Luciano, among numerous other projects. Ferrer has curated major exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution, Notre Dame University, El Museo del Barrio, the Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University, and the Americas Society, where she was Gallery Director for several years. Ferrer is author of Lola Alvarez Bravo (Aperture), named a New York Times notable book of the year, as well as of numerous exhibition catalogues published in the United States and Mexico. Most recently, she authored Latinx Photography in the United States: A Visual History, to be published by the University of Washington Press in December 2020. Daesha Devón Harris is a Saratoga Springs, NY artist and photographer who has spent time in Buffalo, NY and San Francisco, CA. Both her multi-cultural family and the unexpected death of her young father have greatly shaped her life. Harris is a member of various organizations and plays an active role in her community as a youth advocate, social activist and cultural history preservationist. The gentrification of her hometown and its effect on the local Black community has played a major role in both her advocacy and artwork. L. Kasimu Harris strives to tell stories of underrepresented communities in New Orleans and beyond. Harris has shown in numerous group exhibitions across the US and two international exhibitions and has had five solo photography exhibitions. He has penned food columns for the Bitter Southerner and his essay, The Dismantling of Southern Photography, was recently published in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art’s catalogue, “New Southern Photography.” Harris has images in several publications including Dandy Lion: The Black Dandy and Street Style, by Shantrelle P. Lewis (Aperture). Currently, Harris is among 60 artists selected nationwide for State of the Art 2020 at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and has a solo exhibition, Vanishing Black Bars & Lounges: Photographs by L. Kasimu Harris, at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh. His work is also in group exhibitions at the Ford Foundation Gallery and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Chris Johnson is a photographic and video artist, curator and writer. He is a full Professor and Chair of the Photography Program at the California College of the Arts. Johnson’s photographic artwork has been exhibited in gallery and museum shows including the Smithsonian Museum, and the Oakland Museum of California. His video projects have been installed in numerous museums and art institutions. Johnson is the author of The Practical Zone System: for Film and Digital Photography; currently in its 6th edition. Johnson’s transmedia art project, Question Bridge:Black Males, was produced with Hank Willis Thomas and a team including Kamal Sinclair and Bayeté Ross Smith. In 2015, Question Bridge:Black Males won the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award and in 2016 was inducted in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, the Oakland Museum of California and The Harvey Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture in Charlotte North Carolina. Dionne Lee is a visual artist working in photography, collage, and video. Lee received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2017. She has exhibited work at the Museum of Modern Art, Aperture Foundation, the International Center of Photography, and throughout the Bay Area including Aggregate Space, interface gallery, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Lee was a 2019 artist-in-residence at the Center for Photography at Woodstock and a finalist for the 2019 SFMoMA SECA and San Francisco Artadia art awards. Lee’s work was recently included in the 2020 New Photography exhibition, Companion Pieces, at the Museum of Modern Art. Lee currently teaches at Stanford University. Annu Palakunnathu Matthew’s photo-based artwork is a striking blend of still and moving imagery. Her larger work draws on archival photographs as a source of inspiration to examine concepts of memory and to re-examine historical narratives. Matthew’s recent solo exhibitions include the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Nuit Blanche Toronto, and sepiaEYE, New York. Matthew has also exhibited her work at the RISD Museum, Newark Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, San Jose Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Victoria & Albert Museum, 2018 Kochi-Muziris Biennale, 2018 Fotofest Biennial, 2009 Guangzhou Photo Biennial as well as at the Smithsonian. Grants and fellowships that have supported her work include a MacColl Johnson, John Guttman, two Fulbright Fellowships and grants from the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts. Through the use of photography, video, performance art, and installation, Lorena Molina explores identity, intimacy, pain, and how we witness the suffering of others. In the classroom, she works with students to understand the way that images are laden with history and vocabulary. Images tell stories, but who gets to tell the story matters. She received her Master of Fine Art degree from the University of Minnesota in 2015, and her Bachelor of Fine Art from California State University, Fullerton in 2012. Molina was a recipient of the Diversity of Views and Experiences fellowship, The Christopher Cardozo Fellowship and The Kala Art Institute fellowship. Courtney Reid-Eaton is Exhibitions Director at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, and Creative Director of CDS’s pilot Documentary Diversity Project. Responsible for curating, oversight, design and installation for all of the CDS’s galleries and related public programs, her exhibitions include The Collector: Joseph Mitchell’s Quotidian Quest, The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC 1957–1965, and The Self-Care Exhibit: A Word & Image Act of Self-Preservation & Political Warfare. A visual artist working primarily with photography, assemblage and artist’s books, and rooted in documentary expression, Reid-Eaton considers herself to be a Black feminist, a creative engine, and a culture worker. In 2013, after participating in her first anti-racist/anti-oppression workshop, she became committed to centering the work of artists of color and women, to presenting projects that express ideas/address issues of significance to them, and to foster authentic, liberatory community partnerships. A native New Yorker, Reid-Eaton lives and works in Durham.

Gabriel Garcia Román is a Harlem-based artist who was born in Zacatecas, Mexico. His Queer Icons series looks at the disenfranchised QTPoC community, and turns them into heavenly beings. For World Pride 2019, Román was commissioned by the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art to present Queer Icons Procession. His work has exhibited throughout the US, including Grafica America at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach; and Your Mirror: Portraits from the ICP Collection at the International Center of Photography, New York. Aaron Turner is an Arkansas-based artist and educator. He uses photography to pursue personal stories of people of color in two main areas of the U.S.: the Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas. Turner also uses the view camera to create still life studies on race, history, blackness as material, and the role of the black artist. His awards include a 2018 Light Work Artists-in-Residence, 2019 En Foco Photography Fellowship, and 2020 Project Space Residency at the Visual Studies Workshop. Claire A. Warden is an artist working in Phoenix, Arizona. Warden’s series Mimesis has been exhibited widely in the United States and abroad, including solo exhibitions at The University of Kansas Art & Design Gallery, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, and Colorado Photographic Arts Center. She has been named LensCulture’s Top 50 Emerging Talents, Photo Boite’s 30 Under 30 Women Photographers, and a Clarence John Laughlin Award finalist. Warden received an Artist Research and Development Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center Contemporary Photography Exhibition award and the Ed Friedman Award from the Griffin Museum of Photography.
