Discover the magic of collaboration, world building, and wet plate photography in the studio at CPW over this two day workshop with New Orleans based portrait artist Meg Turner. Since its discovery in the 1850s, collodion and silver nitrate have truly seen it all. Using this antiquated process to continue an exploration of our visual humanity, we will join together to create images that transcend time and celebrate ourselves. Participants will create a tableau together using various set building techniques in order to create a unique scene to shoot tintypes over the course of two days.
Participants will learn the basics of collodion chemistry, pour plates, shoot portraits, and process their tintypes. Each participant will go home with a portrait they have taken and one of themselves (participants will pair off and model for each other). We will shoot in a world that we build together and discuss the characteristics of shooting in both natural lighting and artificial lighting.
What to bring: Participants are encouraged to bring props, costumes, and an open mind.
Meg Turner is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her work employs printmaking, tintype photography, sign making, and installation to focus on queer fantasy and economic critique. Turner’s photobook WET was published by Burn Barrell Press in March 2023. Turner’s solo exhibition “Here & Now” was shown at The Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans in 2019. With Courtney Webster, Turner produced a collaborative wet-collodion photographic project titled “Patricide,” which was exhibited at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York; the Bureau of General Services– Queer Division at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York; at Wild Project in New York; and at BRIC in Brooklyn. Meg received her MFA from Columbia University and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She currently teaches printmaking at Tulane University.
