Meet CPW’s 2019 artists-in-residence
CPW purchased an artist house in 2017, and it is all thanks to you! Over 100 people and two foundations came through and helped raise the needed funds.
Because CPW firmly believes that accessibility, representation and diversity are critical to contemporary discourse on photography, this artist house allows us to expand the existing Artist-in-Residence Program for artists and writers of color, establish a visiting artist program and invite former AIRs back to CPW. Access to this house means that artists will always have a home here, and it exemplifies our depth of commitment to diversity, pluralism, current and future generations of image makers.

Additional funds are needed for expanding the visiting artist programs and for key studio improvements for the artists-in-residence. Please consider supporting this program with a donation. Your gift will enable us to provide immediate and direct support to artists.
Securing this permanent home for the Artist-in-Residence Program, WOODSTOCK AIR, means CPW no longer has to fear lack of availability or battle high rental rates during the busy tourist season. Instead of spending time searching and negotiating rental agreements, we can spend our resources and staff time on building better artist programs and helping artists-in-residence (AIRs) make the most out of their time in residency.
In its first year of use, the Artist House was used in many ways. Smitten by its beautiful light, almost every AIR photographed in the studio. Leonard Suryajaya even created an elaborate theatrical set-design for a video and portrait session. Writer John Edwin Mason set up an office, where he wrote prolifically for his Critical Studies residency.

WOODSTOCK AIR was launched in 1999. So far 120 artists have participated in CPW’s Artist-in-Residence Program (as of December 2017). The artist house will allow us to reach hundreds more. Many AIRs have gone on to great success. Most recently, LaToya Ruby Frazier received the MacArthur Genius Award after already winning the Guggenheim fellowship; Deanna Lawson was selected for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; Juan Giraldo was chosen by PDN Magazine as one of this year’s top 30 photographers to watch, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya was featured in MoMA’s landmark exhibition Being: New Photography 2018. Other artists of note include Xaviera Simmons, Kevin J. Miyazaki, Tommy Kha, William Cordova, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Noritaka Minami, and many more. See the full list of artists and interviews.
ABOUT THE HOUSE
The Artist House is a gorgeous and quirky Woodstock house with a long artist history. Built in 1824, it was once the local general store, a blacksmith’s, home to one of the founders of WAAM (Frank Swift Chase), and home and studio to the renowned Mid-Hudson landscape painter Henry Mattson. Most recently, it belonged to an art collector, who beautifully restored it.
This house is absolutely perfect for artists: Two private bedrooms and an attic loft with large studio windows, high ceilings into the rafters, an abundance of work tables, an office and room for a lighting studio. The house is in walking distance to CPW, so artists will have easy 24/7 access to the Center and its facilities (recently remodeled darkroom and digital lab, classroom, library and more).
