Announcing the 2016 Workshop Lecture Series
The Center for Photography at Woodstock is excited to announce the speakers in this year’s Workshop Lecture Series.
The lecture series is a companion program to CPW’s nationally distinguished Woodstock Photography Workshop Series. Join us to hear some of the most distinguished artists in the field talk about their art practices and recent projects. Speakers include: John Mannion & Sean Hovendick, Alejandro Cartagena, Doug Beasley, Lori Nix, Pipo Nguyen-duy, Kelli Connell, Gregory Halpern, Amy Arbus, Gabriel García Román, Ariel Shanberg & Carlos Loret de Mola, David Maisel, Doug Menuez, Lawrence McFarland, Dawoud Bey, and Shana & Robert ParkeHarrison.

CPW | John Mannion & Sean Hovendick Working under the pseudonym AREA, artists John Wesley Mannion and Sean Hovendick combine site-specific performance with photographic documentation to explore the evolving relationship of people and place. Their social interventions reflect a collective awareness of how humans now view the landscape that we are ultimately responsible for creating. CPW | Alejandro Cartagena Alejandro Cartagena’s work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collections of museums such as SFMOMA, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art Houston, and more. He has published and self-published several books including Suburbia Mexicana (2012 Photolucida/Daylight), Carpoolers (2014), Before the War (2015), Rivers of Power (2016), and Santa Barbara with Skinnerboox (2016). He lives and works in Monterrey, Mexico. Lecture and book signing only. |

CPW | Doug Beasley Doug Beasley’s personal vision explores the spiritual aspects of people and place and how the sacred is recognized and expressed in the everyday. His passion and warm spirit while teaching give insight into how he photographs in the thoughtful way he does. Doug has exhibited his work worldwide, including recent shows in Italy and Colorado. He has received numerous awards, including multiple McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers and Travel Study Grants from the Jerome Foundation. CPW | Lori Nix [POSTPONED UNTIL 2017] Lori Nix has been building and photographing dioramas since the early 1990s. Her work has been widely collected and exhibited internationally. As an artist, Nix creates elaborate diaramas or disaster or an otherwise apocalyptic world. The hand-made miniature settings are discarded once she has photographed them. The Drawing Room recently featured Nix and her creative partner Kathleen Gerber in a short film by Robert Hall and Nol Honig. Nix and Gerber are based in Brooklyn, NY. Lecture only. |

CPW | Pipo Nguyen-duy Growing up close to the demilitarized zone of the 18th Parallel, Pipo Nguyen-duy describes hearing gunfire every day of his early life. He immigrated to the US as a political refugee. In his art, Pipo has often returned to the psychological or physical manifestations of war and our fragile sense of safety. He has received key grants and fellowships, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography and a grant from the National Endowment for The Arts. CPW | Kelli Connell [CANCELLED] Kelli Connell’s body of work Double Life has been widely exhibited and was featured in a monogram released by DECODE Books in 2011. Her work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and more. She has been featured in publications such as MP3: Midwest Photographers’ Publication Project (Aperture and MoCP), Vitamin Ph: New Perspectives in Photography (Phaidon) and Photo Art: The New World of Photography (Aperture). CPW | Gregory Halpern Gregory Halpern has published three books of photographs, including A (J&L Books, 2011), Omaha Sketchbook (J&L Books, 2009) and Harvard Works Because We Do (Quantuck Lane, 2003). He collaborated with Ahndraya Parlato on East of the Sun, West of the Moon (Études, 2014) and is currently working on a book of photographs made in and around Los Angeles, which is forthcoming from MACK this Fall. In 2014, he was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. CPW | Amy Arbus [CANCELLED] Photographer Amy Arbus has published five books, including the award winning On the Street 1980-1990 and The Inconvenience of Being Born. The New Yorker called The Fourth Wall her masterpiece. Her most recent title, After Images, is an homage to modernism’s most iconic avant-garde paintings. Her photographs have appeared in over one hundred periodicals around the world, including New York Magazine, People, Aperture and The New York Times Magazine. CPW | Gabriel García Román Gabriel García Román is a photo-based artist and craftsman, who was born in Zacatecas, Mexico. As an artist he’s constantly looking for ways to counteract the flatness that’s inherent to photography: weaving folding, cutting, interlacing prints or collaging are all different attempts at realizing that goal. Photography allows him to explore aspects of his identity and decode the world he lives in. Queer Mexican. American. Immigrant. Secular. Catholic. CPW | Ariel Shanberg & Carlos Loret de Mola Ariel Shanberg is a curator, educator, and writer with over 17 years experience working with artists. From 2003-2015 he was CPW’s executive director. His writing has appeared in monographs, exhibition catalogs, and publications such as Aspect: The Chronicle for New Media Art, Contact Sheet, Exposure, Nueva Luz, and Photograph. Carlos Loret de Mola’s photographs have been exhibited internationally. His solo exhibition Being Upstate was presented at CPW in 2011. Most recently he co-curated the exhibition Common Sense(s) that first was shown at CPW and travelled to Visual Studies Workshop. David Maisel David Maisel is a photographer and multimedia artist. His books The Lake Project and Oblivion were published by Nazraeli Press. Chronicle Books published his monograph Library of Dust in 2008, which The New York Times called “…this year’s most haunting book of images.” Maisel is the recipient of a 2008 Artist Residency from the Headlands Center for the Arts and a 2007 Scholar/Artist Residency from the Getty Research Institute. He has also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Opsis Foundation, and was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Award. CPW | Doug Menuez [POSTPONED UNTIL 2017] Doug Menuez spent thirty intense years traversing the globe, in the process becoming one of the most successful advertising photographers in the US. He covered assignments ranging from the famine in Ethiopia, to sports and celebrities, to the AIDS crisis. His award-winning advertising commissions have allowed him to finance his personal fine art documentary work, including his books Heaven, Earth, Tequila: Un Viaje al Corazón de México, Transcendent Spirit: The Children of Uganda, and the recent Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution in Silicon Valley 1985-2000, published by Simon & Schuster/Atria Books. CPW | Lawrence McFarland Lawrence McFarland gently explores international landscapes with an intuitive, poetic sense of the world. He has received numerous awards and honors including three National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship Grants, the Ferguson Grant from the Friends of Photography, and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. He has been published in several books and a small volume of his work from the American West and Italy was produced by Blue Sky Gallery. CPW | Dawoud Bey Dawoud Bey is a leading voice in exploring cultural identity through street photography and portraiture. He launched his career with his 1975 series Harlem, USA. This work was featured in his first solo exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979. Numerous exhibitions followed at prestigious institutions like the the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many more. Bey has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts and, most recently from United States Artists. They combine sculpture, painting, set design, performance, photography and implied narrative to create constructed, dreamlike images. Their works were recently included in Mediations Biennale, Poznan, Poland, Lille 3000, Lille, France, Wall at WAM, Worcester, Massachusetts, and at Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago. They are represented by Catherine Edelman in Chicago, Slete Gallery in Los Angeles, and La Galerie Particulière in Paris and Brussels.
